An unassailable truth in 1740 and until the early 1940's, but now built on similar shifting sands as the nostalgia and Empire regret of Brexit
I'm sure you mean that in a nice way, but this is nothing to do with nostalgia for empire.

It's a statement of fact that we're a maritime and trading nation, historically and now, it's therefore manifestly obvious that we need to protect our shipping. The RN was run down after the Cold War as part of the 'peace-dividend', and this plus complacency (and a fair amount of political dishonesty and cowardice too) has meant the paring down of the RN to a now absurdly low level.

The ROI as it is now constituted has a different perspective due to its history, national philosophy and size - remember it's economy is well under half the size of London's - and I mean that in a nice way - so it has entirely different aspirations and expectations. Also the ROI has, rightly or wrongly, decided that it wants to tag along with Europe; fair enough, but this in itself requires following the 'European' way in many things. In the instance of international security, that means letting others bear the burden as far as possible; we don't politically choose to and don't economically have to do that.

We have a different outlook for different reasons, and it is not unreasonable for us to expect our shipping to be properly policed and protected when we can well afford to do so. This is not an 'imperial' venture, it's what Norway, Malaysia, India and most other nations do. (y)

The last time you tested your Navy.
But yes we had to admit we needed help to stop the Uk treating us as your bitch.

Firstly, there was no need for my intemperate and provocative posts on this very serious situation, so apologies.
The US sanctions are really biting and Iran now seems to be spoiling for war, hopefully it can be avoided and the British tanker and crew are returned safely.

It kicked off when we seized an Iranian tanker somewhere off Gibraltar as it was heading towards Syria, which is under EU sanctions. Another huge mistake getting tangled up in EU affairs.....again.
At least our own tanker seems to have foreign crew. Interesting to see how it plays out.....

Looks like they will have to scrap that then
What a laughing stock we are
I well remember the last time we were made a fool of out there, and one of our seagoing heroes bleating that "they stole my I Pod!" An Australian patrol, in the same situation pointed out that the machine guns mounted on their geminis would be able to sink the plastic patrol boats facing them, the patrol boats left!

Is it our tanker or is it owned by Scandinavian multi billionaires who are sailing it under a flag of convenience?
No doubt with profits being stashed in tax havens.
Very nieve to be sailing, unprotected, in such places during this time of high tension.

The Tanker is managed for Stena Cyprus ltd by the Scottish company Northern Marine Ltd hence it is UK flagged.(y)
