Here's an idea for a home made bench.....
you couldn't argue that it wouldn't be solid at least...

Was at a local fabrication place couple years ago and they had some offcuts of UBs or columns leftover from a pile driving project, they were about 6-700mm square ish and apparently weighted nearly 500kg per meter! I said at the time they would do some ideal benches or front weight blocks!!!

Big steel when its that size, you wouldn't see it too often, as you say, it would of made some bench..
was up at the scrappys a few weeks ago collecting a bit of plate, i seen he had 18" odd of 350x400 column lying on a pile, i looked it up in the book that night and it was booking at about 500kg pm, it would made a fair lump for beating on, a kind of a redneck anvil.:shifty:

the plate i picked up id make a grand bench worktop

if they were in good nick they werent dear even at that price, but if they didnt sell i wonder what the reserve was...
they would of been far better of selling them in 4 lots, youd get more interested in them that way.

I made mine out of an old blacksmiths Platten block. Its 6" thick solid cast iron that's not far off flat. The legs are 200mm box, 8mm thick and the top is 3 ft square. The holes come I really useful for holding stuff down, vice is easily put on or off the bench to suit what we are doing.... I am trying to upload a pic but don't think my phone can cope with it
