Thanks for that fellas. The access points are in quite different areas ( house / house / office - cow shed ) so quite happy to have them operating their own wifi zones.
Will have a look at the Netgear options @Pheasant Surprise
Think the prob with the run of 5e cable is the wall socket on each end. Usually get this sort of stuff from cable monkey. which is always fine
Had none in stock so sent one of the lads to get a couple of RJ45 outlets from CEF, Closer examination reveals little info on it`s capabilities so will change them & see what happens

Rang EE initialy as they were on the list who can provide a FTTP contract. Said they could not, only BT.
Is this the same as you mentioned @Pheasant Surprise - Will become open to all after 12 ? months

Just came across these handy links with list of all native FTTP providers (using BT Openreach fibre). Too late now but perhaps next contract anniversary...

The "official" list from Openreach
http://openreach.com/fibre-broadband/fttp-providers

The list from thinkbroadband with prices (not 100% up to date mind, still handy):

Son has a BT app on his phone which consistently records speeds of circa 300 at all points on our network.
Trying loads of other speed tests & they all come back with 90 - 100.
Contract with BT was for 300 speed
Any thoughts on what is going on ?

If you’re gonna complain, before you do, connect your laptop/pc directly using an Ethernet lead to the ONT port. Do a series of speed tests from there. Different times of day etc.

Simply put, everything else after that point is your problem. Not theirs. Sorry to be harsh. But that’s basically what they’re going to tell you.

Point i was making was Son`s Bt app comes back with roughly 3x speed of other testers. Have tested on all points on the network starting with the ONT port :scratchhead:
Something doesn’t quite stack up. The only true test is done at the ONT. I’m not quite sure what this BT app is.

Speedtest is pretty well accepted as being a true indication of throughout.

If you don’t think your getting what your paying for, then by all means complain.

Read mention of connection speed being differnt from download / upload speed.
Maybe the bt app is showing connection speed ?
Within the router the speed shown is 1000. At the start it was showing 100. I`ve upgraded some switches /network cards to 10/100/1000 (as mentioned up this thread )which got it to change to 1000

So if you disconnect your router from the ONT and directly plug in your laptop/pc to the ONT instead, your laptop hopefully should be connected at 1000 Mb/s between it and the ONT

Run some tests from speedtest.net - what are your results like?

Just had a call to advise that the local Gigaclear cabinet has gone live today so the journey starts here....

Order placed. Installation from POT to property is non-standard so needs a quote for the works. We shall see what happens.

They must fusion splice the lead-in cable going to the property at the pot.

The Openreach solution is now mostly “connectorised” at the last pole - so they literally come along with an appropriate length lead-in cable and just plug it in and go. They just need to make sure they have the right length on the van!

Will it go underground to your place from the pot?

Gigaclear do this (connectors) also according to this: https://www.fastinternetblog.uk/?p=348

Non standard installation on my end is a result of a longer 100m distance from POT to property (approx 130m total). Yes, all being well it should be underground......just hope the installation cost isn't too frightening.

According to their website non-standard installation is:
Installation of Gigaclear is free for all orders where a standard installation is required. Approximately 95% of our orders are classed as standard installations.

For those installations that are considered non-standard we may not be able to offer you free installation. We will carry out a no obligation site survey and provide you with a cost for installation. Your installation may be considered non-standard if any of the following apply;

  • Your Gigaclear connection point is over 100m away from where you’d like us to place your router;
  • We’d need hot lay tarmac to reinstate the ground or more than 10m concrete/tarmac will need reinstating;
  • You have over 5m of block paving or flag stone that we’d need to lift and/or put back or
  • You have some other unusual surface that would need specialist skills to lift and/or reinstate

Cool. That’s all connectorised and ready to go.

If their quote to hook up your lead-in cable is horrific, wonder if they allow you to connect up to your own single-mode cable? Probably not, but no skin off if you ask.

As in the photos of that website I sent it appears they normally are connectorised, all ready to do your own DIY installation if needed......currently my POT is just a plastic manhole cover (even that's being kind calling it that!) with a tiny plastic tube (duct is too kind!) inside.

I know they used to allow self-install as per that website and sent you out a kit to do it but I'm unsure whether they still do. I think those kits were max 100m length in any event.

Just spoken to them - installation survey date is now booked for Friday 16th August. We shall see what the quote brings.....both £££ and lead time.

Fingers crossed!

Did manage to get them to honor the special offer they were running until yesterday too......300mbps for £35 a month.

That's my only concern with Gigaclear - you lose the competitive element, it could be like going back to BT monopoly days. They claim to have "service providers" but I'm unsure what they can really offer (https://www.gigaclear.net/get-connected )
