Depends on how high the trough is I guess,I’m just putting my feed out as we speak

So a wagon without a conveyor will feed fine on to the floor but if you have troughs you need it? I can't picture a Shelborne wagon except the colour of them and I've only ever fed cows with a Keenan really.

My hi spec feeds into troughs, in fact we have put troughs in some new sheds, have been fed up of seeing dirt getting pushed into silage, built new troughs with feed passage high so even the lowest side door can feed into trough if we ever switch wagon or borrow one in a breakdown

Problem with used ones is side wall thickness. We recently put a new auger in siloking as rs agri came out and measured the tub thickness. Now About 4mm so new auger considered viable as it was only 6mm to start with. As long as there’s enough metal in the tub it should be fine but recon on there not being much left after you’ve worn out the replacement auger. Then it’s pretty much scrap value. 30% bigger shouldn’t be a problem if you can get it around your sheds, load over the top of it and power it. Potentially mix quicker and can be useful if you manipulate rations.

We have been offered a local very well care for machine, only issue its about 30% bigger than we need, would this speed up mixing time, less stress on the machine and save diesel. Wouldnt of normaly considered it but it clean as a wistle and just being changed for a lot bigger machine, its done a lot of work but had new augers recently 20ml plated

What sort?

Toss up between straughtman and Shelborne, but straughtman seam far more proactive with dealing with.

The secoud hand machine would go through halses yard, new augers as wearing thin, an would be in our yard at 25% of new price, so temping. If we purchased a new machine it would be smaller in size and be 3times price of secound hand.

Gotta be worth a throw, surely? Halse are normally a very good company to deal with?

Can you get someone to ultrasound the bottom of the tub?- if the flights are worn it will give you an idea of how long before the bottom of the tub wants relining and if nothing else it might help barter the price down a bit.

Spent around £4.5k on new auger flights (flights were £1200 direct from Southern Ireland), re-lining and blades, feeder stood me £7k once done and has fed 20k tonnes since.

Re-lining was easy compared to the work of cutting the old auger flights off and welding on again,we also extended the augers so they held 12 knives instead of 10,this meant I could extend the sides and gain extra capacity.

Starts with a 3! gets daft when it worth value of 1/4 milking herd!

Can you elaborate a bit on the quote? Size, spec?

I had a price in the spring for a Siloking 22 cube twin auger, no conveyor just front corner and rear centre doors, bale augers (+£600:scratchhead:) wide angle pto etc was £33500. Decided to carry on with the old one a bit longer:bag:
