Mine went in on the 15th of September last year into a lovely moist firm seed bed. Got up and away well and looked far to thick in November. The the larve started to appear in Dec and Jan. Should of ripped it up then but the old man said keep it. Cut yesterday and it may just about scrape a ton. That's to the ha not ac.

Haven't started, some fields cleared ready at least but far to wet. Will be sorting out the new to me SR Claydon I bought for osr and beans. Brisel do you use the duet coulters, I was going to use them with the 5.5" inch A shares?

Which do you mean by the duetts? The twin outlet splitter? If so, yes I use the splitter and A share for osr. Some use the single outlet spout and a much narrower point but I prefer the idea of putting seed on the shoulders of the trench cut by the leading tine, not risking it falling down the hole. I run my A shares just above the ground - the batter boards/ harrows will pull soil over the top for you. I ahve a Hybrid which is different to yours but the basic principle is the same. Best to ask @charlie@claydon what he would use.

@JCfarmer as @Brisel said there are 2 different ways that people can drill OSR and other small seeds with a Claydon.
  • The 7 Inch A Share and Splitter Boot is best for heavy land because it will ensure the seed is kept on the bank and you wont loose any seed too deep (Probably 70% of our customers do this). If you can use a nice worn set of 7 Inch A Share this will work well because it will move slightly less soil and create a nice tilth. Frank Claydon always uses new 7 Inch A Shares on his drill for the cereals but when they're worn down to about 5 inches he'll replace them and save the worn ones for next years for OSR. If its your first year and you don't have any worn 7 inches then you could opt for a new set of 5 inch A Shares. I agree with Brisel about keeping the A Share nice and shallow and using the tool bar on the back to get the soil coverage.
  • The other option is the 3 Inch Spoon and Short Square Boot which works really well on medium / light land which all boils in behind the front tine so you shouldn't lose any seed too deep. This will allow you to move less soil, preserve more moisture and disturb less weed seeds.
Hope that helps, if you have any more questions then feel free to drop me a call on 07747231289
