An interesting case. His family returned to Ireland while it was still part of Britain, they backed the wrong side in the civil war and so came to the UK. He was granted German citizenship in 1940 but it appears that he was never a British citizen, remaining an American up until then. So yes, it was a bit harsh.

The punishment was possibly the correct one? However as he was not a British citizen was he guilty of treason.

You just don't know what to buy. A lot of French wine is sold " green" ie . To be laid down.
If French land is so easy to acquire, how come your a failed wannabe farm buyer, with a holiday home in goat country.
You should have 500 hc and giving us a lesson in how easy it is.

It would appear that he falsely claimed to be British to obtain a passport in 1939. It was argued that since he held a UK passport at the time he started working for the Nazi's he was guilty of treason.

Now you tell me! I know bugger all about wine and had assumed that any sold in France was likely to be a reasonable plonk. Bit of a cop out but I wouldn't be the only one.

A lot sold in supermarkets or caves is to be laid down. The cheaper it is the longer the rest, but not always.
My French friend got me on' to Vieux Pape . Red , to be drunk now or within 2 years.
Good enough to be opened at kitchen supper.

I'm not sure that he is ever spoken of over here. Ireland was officially neutral and there isn't the fascination with all things WW2 that there is in the UK. However, the IRA did try and shoot him when he was still a school if that's any indication.
