This bicarb, how is it incorporated into the diet and in what quantities?

and in what way does it prevent foot trouble? i assume you mean helps prevent lameness?

cheers

never really used it but would guess similar to mineral levels? Just a means to keep the PH in the Rumen correct. Personally I think you will be fine with the SBP in the diet. we never get feet trouble and put it down to that.

About 80 grms/ head a day.

Either mix it with the tmr or if just feeding straight barley etc then just place it on top of the barley in the trough etc.

It will stop gas build up and thus bad feet etc.

Some feed live yeast but in my experience that is a waste of money and more expensive.

just catching up with this thread due to surplus wheat and a shortage of barley! what is the biggest ratio wheat:barley would you feed on a barley beef system? also is acid buff any good at half rate or would we be better with bicarb? plus limestone flour?

thanks! we are on 50:50 at the moment! is anyone feeding 60:40 or would that be pushing it too far?
Dad always said you couldn’t feed a lot of wheat as it would bing them up. But the lad that works for me says where he used to work, they stopped growing barley, and just grew wheat. And the bull beef just got wheat, obviously with protein. Personally I don’t use acid buff or lime flour or anything like that. I do feed sugar beet pulp or soya hulls in the ration though and free access straw. sh!t just nicely forms a pat when it hits the floor. That’s how I know the ration is right and rumen is working.

We have in the past, when we only had wheat, fed mainly wheat. We always grow barley so always use a mix, including some oats even, never had a problem with the wheat diet but anyway (all ours being pure limousine) I am sure they finish better (fatter) with predominant barley

Thanks for your replies! Doesn’t sound that it will do much harm to try it anyway! We feed acid buff to prevent bloating, their muck is quite loose and we have a few feet problems (mainly digi) didn’t know if a higher rate of bicarb might be help! Never thought about it helping feet until I read this thread!

Bicarb won’t help with digi

I know that bicarb Wil not help digi! But I never thought about it helping general foot condition! We do regularly footbath! But as we all know digi is a nightmare to control! If general foot health was better it would help!
