Ok for family farms to fallow but bit differant for the boys who are renting and need to be planting.they still have rent to pay.i was prepared to fallow if no drilling got done.at least we would not be spending anything.very difficult situation for all concerned

Not sure it is. How do they cover drawings etc? For me if I don't plant anything then I have a shortfall of about £40 an acre. But that's not awful. My wife works, and I can just go and get a little part time job. I don't have three generations to support etc.

Those with the bought and paid for mentality may think they can grin and bear it due to asset value, but in terms of income I think they may be in for a worse shock.

Yup. The traditional bread basket area has taken a beating. I can drive in a sixty mile radius and apart from a bit on the cliff and on the heath there is no cereal drilled. Prior to the neonic ban a good chunk of here would be osr. Very little of that.

There are knock ons too. Contract farms can fallow without large costs. So unless prices go up considerably there will be little spring planting. Ad plants will be short, so you may see spring cereals silaged. It may have a longer term worse result on stock farmers as straw will not be abundant, nor will cheap grain.
Power stations will struggle next year

Unsure. I suspect that they have contracts. Like ad plants, I'd expect them to be strong buyers. Add to it that noone will want to be caught out waiting for balers, hence power plants will be a better option than baling for other folks stock.

I'm going to attempt to make hay from spring oats. Fss, digestate, blw / Fung / pgr, then mow it. As an inexpensive way of getting the land back in order.

Think this thread should be called 'Not Concerned, Got past caring!' for all of us who had the terrential rain yesterday.

To be honest a lot of us got past caring when we got to the 7 inches of rainfall .
Now heading towards 12 inches so I don't give a damn what happens in the next few weeks but will rely on a dry Jan /Feb/march /April , but will need showers to get anything planted growing

Yes I agree with you regards drawing but I’m sure a massive amount of family farmers live on a very low wage and I’m sure a lot have a second or even third income.

A food shortage would let the public know what we up against but it will never happen.already read somewhere today about massive rape shortage next year and having to import it,even though it’s had the seed dressing that’s been banned here.all rules then out of the window then.as long as the public get cheap food they don’t care where it comes from or how it’s produced
