Heavy rain again but did manage to reopen an old gateway out on to the road at the sandy and clean end of the beet field. We are ring fenced but no chance of crossing barley stubble with trailers so bringing it round by road when we get going again. Better check my lights.

They're currently 'paddling' about through us to put a water main in to feed it......

.....bit of a waste really, they'll have enough water there when the Trent comes over.

I heard about that from one of the guys on this building site ,he lives up the road from you,,isnt it comming up past the mineral works and over the 15 at some point,not sure where its heading to

Rain here most of the afternoon but fine and dry now. Hopefully no more rain for next 24 hrs, river the other side of the road is flooding at the top of the road the EA have sandbagged the bank top upstream where it ran over last weekend. If they cut the weeds out properly it probably wouldn’t be an issue, they silt tested it last year and it apparently needs a meter out !.

Folks in the village say it’s not been done in 30 years, I’m 46 and I can’t ever remember it being done. They weed cut it every year but never take anywhere nr enough out, I can remember it when it was a river and not a weed ridden mess. There’s also a stretch of dyke that runs into it that never gets touched as they can’t get at it with a machine.

We have flood warnings along the Witham from Washinborough Fen through to Metheringham Fen. I had never seen our Delph nor the Sincil Drain and Witham so full as two weeks ago a big problem for us if water is held in either the Carr Dyke or Delphs then we get the water seeping into the fields as these are higher than the land also no signifcant maintenance has been carried out for years all we need now is for high tides so the floodwater can't get away and we will be back to the middle ages.

My grandad used to work some of that land ,every wet time the bog oaks would rise to the surface

The Carr Dyke runs though the top of our fen and is chuck full as it’s also the the dyke I referred to in my earlier post that they never do out as they can’t get a machine in !.

At our end they just cut the grass. Which is fine when the water can get away which at present it can't because the Drains and the Witham are full ( this morning the Witham was six inches above the highest level on record). At the moment bog oaks floating to the surface would be useful as canoes.

It runs into the river Skirth about 100 yards up the road from me, the Skirth was the highest it’s been this morning at 2.7m since 2008 when it reached 2.61. It’s flooded the front garden of the nursing home that’s built next to it and that’s where the stretch is they can’t get at !, they weed cut the rest of it last year at this end and did a reasonable job but it’s not been touched this year as yet.

To put some of the numbers into perspective Lincolnshire has received some 200 - 250mm rain depending on location since 22 September, 47 days, about 45% of annual average rainfall. Exceptional amounts. Overall the current state of watercourses seems about right. And at end of day this water has to leave the county by very few exits. So the grand sluice at Boston for all the Witham water - and a low tide twice daily, so there is a physical limitation to the exit. Just surprised there is not more localised flooding.
