As posted earlier, the tapeworms in the sheep don’t cause this problem, it’s passed through a (different) tapeworm in dogs. The only way to kill it is to worm all dogs regularly with Drontal, don’t let any dogs (or foxes?) eat any infected carcasses, and close all footpaths to keep everyone else’s dogs off.

Maybe @Woolless can answer, but at what point does it become a condemnation issue? I often have one or two in a dw batch that have a note on it, but i’ve Never had any deductions.
I also wonder how reliable the diagnosis is too. I had 69 from one batch of 112 hoggets with it in April, but the next batch of 80 only had 2, despite having run together all their lives.
Does panacur 100 liquid cover tapeworms? It is £18 for 100ml which will do 4 dogs as opposed to drontal at £12/dog.

From Google.....
Panacur Small Animal 10% Suspension
Panacur 10% Oral Suspension is effective against roundworms in both cats and dogs. Panacur Small Animal 10% Suspension is a broad spectrum wormer for the treatment of roundworms, tapeworms and lungworms in dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

These cysts are a relatively common finding in the heart particularly. We deem it to be generalized if there are cysts found in three separate areas. These are generally left or right diaphragm, heart, either side of abdominal wall or any other muscle.

I had to condemn 19 out of a batch of 40 before. They were riddled. Spoke to the farmer next day. The lambs were BFL tups being culled because they had been exposed to an MV positive tup and fair play to him for that. Unfortunately, they were in a field next the steading. His first stop in the morning was to let the dogs out. Second stop was to give lambs a bite of feeding, whereupon the dogs (wormed only twice yearly) took their morning dump ?

You would need to check with a SQP but I think that small animal 10% Panacur will be exactly the same as Panacur 10% for cattle. (Which is more than likely a lot cheaper). The sheep Panacur is only 5% so won't do.

We worm all dogs monthly with Droncit and Drontal twice a year, no dogs allowed on the farm unless they're on a dosing program as well. Signs up at all gates warning people of the rules ( I'll get a photo later).
It is mostly spread from dogs eating or being fed raw infected meat or scraps, we're very hot on dogs not eating afterbirth and on farm waste right from a young age and don't feed any meat unless it has been well cooked or frozen for 4 months.

Always used to use 10% Panacur for worming dogs & cats BUT it doesn't touch the particular tapeworm that causes the problems with lamb condemnations. You need a Praziquantel wormer for that, such as Drontal, or the cheaper generic versions that are available now. I don't use Panacur for them any more.

Plenty of people walking fido on the footpaths over here can't see why 'playing with the sheep' is any problem, let alone cleaning the sh*te up behind him. There's certainly very little hope of policing enforced worming protocols.

I was going to get my vet to write a piece for the town newsletter here, hoping they might listen to him, where they'll tell me it's not a problem.

It strikes me there is a problem here that needs adressing here by the auctioneers who have no doubt deducted their commission from the lamb.

I had an issue last year when I sent a pen of killing ewes to the live market on one of the hottest days of the year. The day after the auction I was called by the auctioneers who said that one of my ewes had died in the pen during the night. They deducted the value of the ewe from my cheque but still charged commision for selling it! I thought that the sheep should not have been kept in market the night after the auction without food or acess to water. Makes farm assurance a total farce in my eyes? Anyway I just put up and shut up but feel I was well and truely done over. Double standards or what. Whose responsbility at the fall of the hammer?

thats ridiculous, fall of the hammer its the buyers, and to leave it in a pen all night aswell...

i would not use that auction again if that were me, discrace

Kepak want ours fasted before they go, either here or at the collection centre overnight.

that will make em lighter, i would also encourage you to do this if i was buying your stock by weight, to be fair should not effect carcass weight though if selling dead weight?

What's in their belly doesn't effect the dw, just the amount of mess & waste that has to be dealt with somewhere on the chain. I'm happy not to have to buy feed to have it thrown in a skip at the other end.

I had trouble with a neighbor walking his dog in my empty fields (away from where I live) some "beware poison" signs and trays of dog food left about with splashes of red food coloring on them soon sorted that out.
