I'm guessing a slow running stream ?

Not necessarily I have seen it done with quite a fast flowing river. A tank embedded in the side of the river with the pipes coiled inside tank allowing the water to go through. They did make it so that the coils could be lifted to flush any silt out with a high pressure hose.

Also important to remember the Environment Agency will take its pound of flesh out of any scheme for doing nothing.

We quickly looked into using the stream we have running through the garden but although possible it was going to a nightmare to get EA and NRW and everyone else to agree to us using it plus there’s a minimum temp that you can return the water back to stream and from memory cannot harvest any more than 4???? degree from the water. RHI with the setup was also an issue according to the installers. But, it is something I’ve looked into afterwards and could be a possibility in years to come if the ground loops turn out to be extracting too much.

Stealth is your friend when it comes to the EA.

4C is quite a generous temperature change though - roughly equates to taking a 1.7kW of heat from a flow of 1 litre/second.

don’t quote me on the 4degree though, it could be capped lower I can’t remember what it was. So roughly I would need about 8ltrs a second of flow? I have actually tried to measure the flow with a bucket at the exit point of a 225mm twin wall pipe as I looked into a mini hydro possibility. It was over 10ltr per second as it was too difficult to hold the bucket there!!!

Heat capacity of water is 4,200 J/kg-C, so every kg of water will liberate 4,200 J when you take 1C out of it. If that's per second, it would be 4.2 kW - which

(hold on...) that tells me that my earlier maths was out by an order of magnitude.

1 litre per second will give 17kW of heat, based on a 4C temperature drop.
