Unliberal undemocratics

For the first fifty years of my life, I had never even met anyone who would admit to voting Liberal, in fact I can't remember ever having even seen an election poster. So it was a bit of a shock to find that on moving to the English/Welsh border, we had moved to Lib Land!
However, it didn't take long to realise that their oft' repeated mantra of "We don't want to tell anyone what to do" really means " We're not having ANYONE telling us what to do"
Really, you mean South Shropshire Ludlow constituency, the Tory party stronghold where Philip Dunne has a majority of over 19000 and over 62% of the electorate voted for him? You mean that Lib land?
The only time it wasn’t Tory was when Gill retired and Tory head office tried to push someone from outside the constituency (London) into the seat. Voters all rebelled and voted for the Much Wenlock councillor Matthew Green. He lost in 2005 when Ludlow councillor Dunne stood against him.
Voting in Green was something Ludlow should be very proud of. The plan of parties parachuting people in to safe seats is an odious practice and anti-constituency politics.

Hmm. To me, the policy isn't the problem its the person.

As a party, they are going to lack experience of office and will appear less 'professional' but then people want less career politicians.
The trouble with the policy is not just that it is contrary to the principles of a liberal democracy, it is that they get votes for remain rather than for the party. It is an opportunist clamor for votes for the issue, which will see them quickly dumped back in to the wilderness at the next election.
The South West [England] is a strong lib-dem area and leave area. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Yes, I was one of the 62% and I will be again! Actually live in the very Northern tip of his constituency amid the Liberal Undemocratics , largely from Powys, a mere cockstride away.

I think if the Lib Dem’s had managed to get a big name ex liberal Tory (griev, Hammond,Clark) as a leader for this election, it would of given them 20 more seats at least.

I think you have a very poor judge of character.

The UK & specifically Scotland has a significant crime problem linked to human trafficking & drugs.

No Liberal regardless of their flavour acknowledges their policies have done nothing but help destroy UK society .. and this also IMHO goes to the root of causing division between the UK nations. Having devolved parliaments does not create a cohesive soceity .. it gives money & resources to those politicians who have a vested interest in dividing us.

Liberalism is cr@p .. the failed policies are everywhere and the lack of responsibility follows.

I beg to differ.
Despite the fact that myself and my family generally have done very nicely out of capitalism, I think for the wider population, it is capitalism that is crap and I don't think I have any right in a political system that suits my own personal agenda.

Agreed. Nothing personal but she is not party leader material and would never come across as a stateswoman unfortunately. We live in a marginal Tory seat (2000 majority) with around 50,000 votes in total at the last election. It was an LD seat in Paddys’ time. Think we are headed for a Tory minor majority as Corbyns dream of an equal society and spend spend spend will actually scare lots of folk even Labour voters. Visions of the unions having regained powers- ?

When the Liberal Democrats had their election for a new leader, in July , I think they elected the wrong candidate.
Ed Davey , who had served in the coalition would have made a more capable leader.

The LDs make a habit of shooting themselves in the foot but they are certainly not alone thankfully.

Roger Albert running at the mo, so my response, what about “a car in Kielder’s chance”?
:ROFLMAO:
Forgot they was on! Friend of mine does the old boys exhibition rallies these days. Runs a a 205T 16 no less and just bagged a Bastos liveried Escort 4x4 cossie too! Walked several miles into Keilder many moons ago to watch the RAC in the dark. That’s when the RAC was a marathon not a sprint!

Capitalism is still the best way but needs reigning in by capitalists, not Marxists. Fundamental fine tuning rather than wrecking.:sneaky:

2 stages in Radnor on Thursday evening, running through until tomorrow afternoon, 300 stage miles. Not quite a sprint (y)

I think you have far far too much material things .. that's your problem.

The truth is that without modern industry and capitalism the poor would be worse off by far whilst the rich would remain insulated.

Capiltalism brings efficiency .. it does bring financial crime but crime is a human trait where greed outways society. Most people in the UK are honest and decent. I don't see other cultures around the globe which are better at all.

I suggest that you sit somewhere without any gadgets, clothes, cars - try and exist for as possible based on your own abilities. You'll find very quickly the worth of Capitalism. You may not understand what is around you and cost paid by others in history and are willing to throw it away as worthless.

But most poor people know the value.

Take away the ability of the poor man to own a gun .. then the rich will dictate their future.

I find it quite disturbing how modern Western politics is going about destroying the future standard of living.

"Climate Change" is being used specifically to make the poor in the West poorer.

Lowering the standard of living.

The rich who use the most CO2, use the most resources .. show no sign of guilt and show no sign of reducing consumption. Yet they are behind the message.

I think that message is two faced.

Capitalism is probably the best system as long as you understand and address its flaws.
These are;
It fails to 'value' all the vital but immaterial elements of society such as happiness, quality of life and health.
The pursuit of will always be plagued by short-term-ism.
The inevitable need for consumerism which is the cause of the 'climate emergency'.
The absence of parameters or limits which lead to a few individuals/ companies having wealth that eclipses many countries.

Capitalism worked well in the confines of individual nations but globalism has created a monster which nobody has even attempted to tame.
