I’m sure I’ve read in the bs that an extractor has to be seen to draw away from your working area.

"Welding, inspector? Nah, haven't welded anything for years. What welder? Oh, that one in the corner. Why, I'd forgotten all about it! Just scrap metal now - must get rid of it."

In other words, how likely are you to get tapped on the shoulder by a jobsworth whilst in the act of welding something outside? For those of us who do very little of it, and only weld outside anyway, it's the usual story with petty officialdom - ignore it.
