What options are there for softening borehole water?
This type of setup is what we have

Did you all know you were likely to hit water before you drilled? I'd like one, but the impression I got was that it was fairly hit or miss as to if there would be any water.
some ares better than others,A guy we do work for had one done whilst we were there putting a shed up not enough water to wash your face Lincs,Notts border

Indeed. I'd like one but I'm not inclined on spending £4k on a snazzy hole without a bit more promise than "well drill a bit and see". One local farmer has one. Might book a days drilling in the new year.

One on a neighbouring farm, produces enough to run two irrigators, we drilled about 600m away and it was dry. ?

I've seen the Ozzie drillers and they know when they'll hit water , so why can't they here ?

Standard UK fear of risk. They won't even have a good guess - it's a case of pick your site and we'll keep drilling by the sounds of it, rather than them suggest a spot with a better chance of success.

the firm that drilled ours, insisted we had their 'diviner' first. Had been an unbeliever before, not anymore, he told us where, 2 levels of water, 1 at 9 m, carry on till we hit the 2nd at 29 m, which will give you as much water as you would ever need. Spot on, they use a line, with a buzzer, to calculate the amount of water, couldn't wind it in fast enough. I would dread to think of how much money, we had wasted on water, after seeing the amounts we save now !

We purchased a small plot of land from Yorkshire water 10 years ago with a bore hole on it 500 metres from farm never used it as we were told we would never get permission to extract. If I could get permission to use it could we pump using a PV system to save putting electricity up to it ( it has 10metres of fall to the farm)

There is very little of Southern England , where you will not find water.
generally in two levels the first is till water, which is percolated from the immediate top and depends on rainfall.
the lower level is the artesian standing water which rarely changes

Think you can take 20,000 litres a day without a licence, except for spray irrigation

We are over sandstone. When the Dales Water guy came out he was very confident a 70m bore would get us plenty of water. I know further east from here towards the coast (in coal country ) there is less chance of sucess.

When dad phoned to enquire about drilling a borehole here, the chap, just asked for an address, then asked what side of the road we were on, dad replied with answer, chap said he could guarantee us water on our side of the road, but not on the other. Presumably he had some sort of geological map.
Rig came, and the crew said when they hit water, it was one of the shallower wells they had a drilled for a while.
