Glad you're ok. as a general question, what is the best way to keep a ladder secure? thinking of painting the house this summer, but no access for a basket.
holdfast... use two so if ones goes you have a back up... or hire scaffold tower... or pay someone else.

Aren't you supposed to have a ticket? Not being funny, genuine question.

As an aside, did you know all ladders are supposed to have a cross bar at the base? Can't buy one without it now which is bloody awkward in a tight/uneven space.
To be honest not sure
Never been asked for one before??

Edit
never hired off the firm above before, used them as an example because they showed price

Throw a line over the roof, secure it to a decent anchor point(s) and tie off to the ladder.
Helps if you tie the free end to the ladder also and then you aren't reaching for it when you reposition the ladder

Its theres room , pull the loader underneath or close to and up then strap or tie the ladder to it then go up Jack and the beanstalk style :sneaky:
IySwim, it cant go anywhere then, tied to the loader.

What I've done somtetimes also if theres room, is build a platform of bales underneath where you need to work, ts a very safe way to replace roof sheets. Better than scaffold ir , as long as you dont cause sparks of course, when doing the work.

i was up against an upright RSJ so its wasn't the smartest place to be. I went back up in the man basket last night and finished the job.

I hate ladders, so try and use bales.
Either as a little stack like this:

Or for something like gutters, two or three high in the bale grab on the loader will usually get up to the height required when resting on the floor. There's an 8' long working platform, and easily moved along to do the next 8'.

I think we are all guilty of short cuts and then something happens and reminds us they're not always a good idea.
Pleased your okay though it does make you stop and think.
I was trying to get some halters on a couple of heifers for the first time. Should have put some gates and got them in the crush , but didn't bother. Got the halter on the first okay but the second turned on me hit me in the stomach and took me down the side of the shed, 2 feet away from being slammed into the wall it backed off.
Following day it was put into the crush and halter put on .Short cuts can have long standing consequences and are really not worth it.
