Just gathering up my mobile yard (Scotpen) that’s been modified with a genuine prattley winch. The winch is wanting to unwind it’s self which isn’t ideal! Any ideas how to sort it out?

Is the cable wound on the correct way?

Yeah the strap is wound on the right way. It’s the brake within the winch that’s not gripping

My old prattley has started to unwind on its own as well, so l would also be interested in ideas as well.

I've not seen a Prattley winch for a while, so this is from memory....Is there a bit of rust on the spring catch, making it stick? My old one did that a few times, but taking the cover off and spraying with WD40 sorted it.

Yes we had ours changed by Prattley due to a defective batch. About 12 months ago.
I've had this, on enquiry it's the brake pad that wears out on them but apparently the spares are just not available with prattley wanting you to go for a new winch. In essence it's only a braked winch, the likes of which are readily available on line but you would need to modify the handle to let it clear the frame where it sits on the frame.
Personally I've always liked the idea of rigging up an electric winch, especially if setting up several times in a day. Not got around to it yet though.....

Anyone managed to find reasonably priced spares for a Prattley winch anywhere? Ours is 18 years old and with regular greasing has worked fine. Last year or so it almost brakes too well and jumps down in stages rather than smoothly - annoying but livable with. Everything is pretty worn inside so hard to picture what it looked like new,, but certainly can't justify the price of a genuine replacement.

Have a look what a sh one makes on Ebay.
The cost to change might not be as great as first thought.

I don't think they're available- certainly Prattley would rather sell you a new winch that spares to repair it. I opted for a Sealey braked winch with wire rope which came in at a much lower cost than the prattley winch. You would have to alter the handle arrangement slightly but it's a straightforward enough job to do.
Mine does that too unwind 10 turns nothing happens then drops a foot

Currently putting it back together as is, a Sealey winch looks like it may be the way forward long term though.
I assume the 540kg one will be enough, not a lot of weight/strain involved.

Shifting my yards last night and noticed the sticker says swl 400kg. You should be fine with the Sealey
@AftonShepherd I've fitted the sealey winch to my prattley and a mate's. Both get used regularly and coming up for 18 months service with no issues.
Am still keen on the idea of an electric one though.....

Did you extend the handle? Or move the winch so it's off centre on the frame?

Try a Rappa one. Lower geared. More turns but a lot easier.
