Auto for towing for sure, just make sure the autobox has been serviced correct, oil and filter at spec miles if you are to heavy loads long distance make sure you have a oil cooler fitted,

when towing with a auto I use the manual side of it to go down the gears to help slow down heavy loads

Can you not slide it into manual and downshift to get engine braking?
No manual on land cruiser ,just 1,,2 and drive ,maybe newer auto trucks have a manual setting ,not mine though ,,just have to anticipate your braking alot sooner with a trailer pushing.
I wouldnt go back to manual ,I've got very lazy
