Looking for new truck (well, new to me) found 2012 navara with sub 30k miles, looks like it’s spent it’s life in town.

What’s experience of these trucks?

its quite far away and not been to look at it yet

thanks

Is it manual or auto? Manual have weak clutch but with those miles if its cheap enough get it bought cause itl be ok even it needs clutch it wont be that expensive. Did they not recall navaras while back for rusty chassis breakin?

I wouldn’t bother. My local salvage yard has row after row of those things parked up having been condemned for chassis rust. Must be hundreds of them lined up. And lorries queued up waiting to unload more of them!

have they changed the chassis design since these problems?

knew there’d been recalls, was that just to inspect and condemn?

Transfer box seal goes on them not enough to leak oil out so you don’t realise but enough too let moisture in which then corrodes the 4wd switches £159 for the switches or if your really unlucky it lets the oil out 1 drop per day at a time out so you don’t notice then explodes... EGR valves were a problem on them too most people get them deleted

The chassis was made of very poor quality steel that quickly flaked away into big holes in the sidewalls. They cracked open in front of the rear springs. It doesn't help that they stamped so many holes on the chassis at very wet and dirty areas that it looked liked Swiss cheese, letting all the crap in to rust from the inside out.
The current chassis, even though it is coil sprung, looks very much like the old one. Full of unnecessary holes. They have added a little channel iron gusset underneath, just in front of the rear wheels, but unless they have changed to a better grade of steel along the way, I can't see Nissan setting any standards for long chassis life any time soon.

I can see that you are very tempted by the vehicle. If so, make very sure that the chassis is near perfect and that Nissan haven't put a time limit on any compensation. I believe they have, so be very aware that you may be left with a nice looking lump of scrap in the not too distant future.

Thanks, was hoping you’d chip in. Maybe Nissan not the one for me, want something to last well into 6 figures

what brand would you recommend? Budget is in the low teens, ideally sub 50k mileage. Not overly fussy about brands, but want something reasonably comfortable and reliable. Had a 2010 ranger that did 145,000 which I like but it wasn’t the comfiest.

I don’t thrash my vehicle (normally), unfussed by manual or auto. Do about 15k/yr, majority short trips with a fair bit off road.

Have wondered about merc Gl things as they seem a lot of car 2nd hand compared to pickup prices but think spares/repairs would bite me. Plus pickup tray is handy.

cheers

Buy a Hi lux more cost effective in the long run

I know, I’m sure it would be but on my budget to purchase they’re mostly pretty high mileage. Also heard not the comfiest, I get a bit of trouble with my back if driving position cramped. Never actually driven one t see tho..,,

I’m on my 2nd D40, first 1 was 2006 and I drove it like I stole it nearly everyday and had it chipped as well , I traded it in at almost 10 yr old with no problems. I traded it for a 2015 and I’ve it had almost 5 years and again no problems .I Don’t drive this 1 quite as hard as the old 1 and I haven’t chipped it as yet. Had a chassis check recently and it’s going in to get some paint on it in April. I would have another .??

My old 12 plate did over 100k, only part i can recall fitting was a free wheeling pulley on the alternator.

Passed the chasis inspection, but they were going to have it back to paint it. However the 3 day demo i had when it was in being inspected persuaded me into an np300.

Whilst they do snap more often than others, they are not the only ones that are prone to snapping.

I certainly would not be afraid of one, like any second hand buy, give it a good once over, paying perticular attention to the chassis

Mines going for an inspection next week, reakon Il get it back?
I got mine back ok. just remember to empty everything out. They went through every nook and cranny in mine lost about 25 quid and a pack of batteries :(
To the OP I'm on my 2nd both high mileage when got them and both been pretty much faultless. They may not be the best pick up on the market but they are by far the best VFM one. Also if the Chassis snaps they will stand by it.
