We have finished drilling w wheat today and now drilling for a neighbour. I'm fairly sure thats it now, although siskin is ok till towards the end of feb??? Nothing else to go at really except failed osr which could go 2nd wheat but I don't think it will plough up particularly nice.
Just adding up and we have actually drilled more w wheat than was currently planned(about 5ha) albeit to a different cropping plan!
More 2nd wheats than originally planned and slightly less 1st some after maize and other after spuds.
Not having a poke at your goodself but your first sentence explains/confirms my long held view hat a donkey of your own is worth 1/2 an hoss

Well, that’s me drilled up just in time for it to start raining. Even managed to get the spud field drilled up which was a bonus 20ac I wasn’t expecting to get in, just one wet headland but pretty good on the hole.

5ha of Zyatt left to do, don’t think we’ve ever drilled ww this late or in such poor conditions (all behind irrigated spuds) a couple of wet holes but haven’t been stuck. Just have to watch out when spraying pre-em!

Hopefully the rain will blow through quickly.

Someone at Niab said about winter wheat latest sow dates -

“Generally they are pretty safe, but of course you can never predict what the weather will do once you have drilled. Generally I am saying 2 weeks past the latest safe sowing date should be OK but of course every week that moves on the risk of a problem increases.”

Vernalisation safe dates are very broad brush. One date would not be the same in a south facing field in Hampshire compared to a North facing field 800foot up the side of a moutain on the Pennines.

Also mild weather after drilling great, get the crop germinated & moving ready for that cold week in March or April

I dont know whether the wheat will vernalize but it looks like the hedgerows have been through theirs already, quite a few hedgerowView attachment 857416 plants out in leaf or in forward bud stage in every other year cut hedges, quite unseasonable I would say
Been putting off pruning the roses so far, but had to do them yesterday as they were full of broken buds and leaves. Not my favourite job!

How's the recently drilled stuff going to do now it's going to be stood in pools of water again? Flying up over England yesterday looked like a hell of a lot has been drilled, couldn't see flying down a week ago because of being in Isle seat and cloud but presume a lot was done in the last week.
