New Pc

Looking for a new desktop PC or possibly a laptop.
What is a good spec?
Needs to have a decent grafics card

What do you intend to do with it?

If you buy a laptop it will cost more, poke for poke because you are buying a battery, monitor and keyboard all in one. You will not be able to upgrade it, either.

What do you need the graphics card for, if it is for gaming, what games do you want to play and what size is your monitor?

The graphics card alone could be £500 or even £1000 but your definition of 'decent' will be different to what everyone elses.

Have a reasonable machine now but it`s windows 7 Pro
Want to keep it for Quickbooks, not Vat registered with second company so no need to use the subscription service
already have a win 10 laptop which gets used for the farm accounts, but its pretty slow.

Ok, take the laptop to a local PC shop and have them install an SSD in it and clone your existing drive. That should sort your problem on that front.

The use of a GPU will depend on the software you are using to edit- some software makes use of GPUs extensively I understand but not all. A mid-range card would probably do, my friend has suggested a GTX 1050ti but that is an old card now a GTX 1660 would be similar poke but newer.

AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 would do the job, in the world of intel I would look for an i7 if at all possible.

It might be worth ringing Overclockers/Novatech and asking for advice. 32GB of RAM will not be cheap but it will be thing that shaves a lot of time off of editing videos.

Speak to Utopia Computers I found them excellent. They built this for me about 3 weeks ago for my Photoshop work. I use three 24 inch monitors. Windows 10 BTW. Excellent to deal with and shipped in a strong wooden case,

iMac 27" with the drive capacity to suit you. Don't pay for more RAM because I believe that 27" iMacs have easy access to swap it out or add more at a fraction of what Apple charge. Do check first though, because you really should fit 32GB of RAM these days to make best use of SSD drives and 5K displays and multi-tasking.
Also try and specify a 500GB SSD drive rather than a Fusion drive. Fusion drive has an SSD for quick start-up but a slower hard drive for most of the storage, which is fine, but not great. Add an external larger SSD drive with Thunderbolt cable for backing up [using its standard Time Machine, for backing to the SSD, and iCloud].
They give a choice of graphics cards to suit the machine and different applications. Ideally you would have two external drives that sit on the stand base, with one for file storage of bulky items like your music and pictures, and the other for backing up both the main machine and the first external drive.

Be prepared to pay around £2500 inc VAT, possibly more. Get the extended numeric wireless keyboard if you do enter loads of figures intensively. It isn't an expensive extra. Both keyboard and mouse are wireless. I prefer the older versions, like I've got, because they use [rechargeable] standard AA batteries where the current versions use built-in batteries that necessitate the device being connected by wire to charge, I believe. I just swap batteries every now and then, every about two weeks, for freshly charged ones, very quickly indeed.

My iMac is now in its ninth year and gets a lot of use, only switched off every month or two, and has never given any bother. It is on the very latest operating system, which is always a free download from Apple.

External Thunderbolt3 1GB SSD for lightening fast read and write.

If you really need more performance, which I doubt, there's always the iMacPro or new MacPro. Spec these up and you are looking at £5000+

I just bought a new office PC from PC Specialist. They build to your spec and more importantly no junk of any sort on the system.
I had a Ryzen 5 Six core processor, 16GB Ram. RX 550 graphics (only really used to make it easy to plug in my 2 27" monitors) and a 512GB PCIe SSD dont need lots of hard disc storage as all the important stuff is in the cloud. Loads of space to add some if I want.

It works a dream and I am really pleased with it

I did likewise, though a little higher spec. Couldn't be more pleased with the result - nice to have a machine that's well on top of any job I can give it.

...and nobody mentions twin monitors? I couldn't operate without at least two.

Yes, the chosen editing software is important as they don't usual work on both Apple and Windows machines. Whether the OP needs lightening speed or not depends on what he is editing and how much. The quality of a film depends more on content and interest than fancy effects.

I'll crawl back under my stone now and leave the techno gurus in peace!:ROFLMAO:
