Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

I talked to an auctioneer yesterday and it was his impression that the abattoirs had got together, said 'its now or never, this is our chance' and got the prices back ready for this years lambs starting to come on market through the spring and summer.

Your auctioneer is talking rubbish and is creating unnecassary suspicions and hatred between farmers and meat wholesalers;

1) Abattoir staff are failing to turn up or are refusing to work, if the abattoir closes they will still receive 80% of their income, so why should they put their families at risk? Therefore abattoirs are struggling to keep lines going.

2) To confirm this point all members of staff walked out of a poultry plant in Ireland today.

3) Would the auctioneer use his personal money to purchase £250,000 worth of lamb and fill a chiller for export, knowing full well the government may introduce further restrictions on movement overnight?

4) Abattoirs already have chillers full of lamb and ewes which were purchased at peak prices last week, which they are struggling to sell without taking a big hit.

Tell your auctioneer to concentrate on his own job as a few meat companies will be going bump soon and may take his mart with them. However, if he feels that the meat trade is lucrative maybe his mart should purchase an abattoir and show the rest how it is done. A few marts have done this in the past and we all know how it ended.

To be fair the abattoir staff walk out today was on the cards before this virus.
A certain company which we all know very well are and have been for some time on seriously poor terms with some of their staff.
Union involved and staff walked.
I know this because I know people that work there.
I’m not sure about the rest of what’s been said but it is a tactic which has been used before many times.
I agree this is uncertain times and changing by the hour.

you can hardly blame farmers for not trusting processors , they have hardly fostered any loyalty in the past 30 years , One in particular mentioned above , But i do feel sorry for staffing problems and is hardly fair on front line staff of any profession forced to work while others stay paid at home , there should be some sort of reward for taking a risk to help others , not necessarily financial ,maybe time off or a pension credit for later .

The majority of the European slaughter staff have left or are leaving. The others simply do not want to work when the government will guarantee that they will receive 80% of their wage, whilst sitting at home. Therefore the auctioneer was stirring sh17 and blaming meat wholesalers without any proof.

Farmers do trust processors that is the reason why so many have stuck two fingers up at the marts and have gone dead weight, with auctioneers behaving in this manner for once I fully support farmers for going direct, why pay commission and get messed about when you can send them in dead weight with prices guaranteed.

Having followed this thread for a few years it has become apparent that the marts create this distrust between farmers and wholesalers, in order to keep their gravy train running.

Have you heard auctioneers saying it's the farmers fault? But they are quick to stir it and blame wholesalers, when the virus, staff shortages and movement restrictions are beyond their control.

What a load of bullocks the processors brought it all on themselves with their treatment of farmers during foot and mouth.
Trying to blame the marts is quite frankly ridiculous, there are no fat marts in Ireland.....that's worked out really well for our Irish cousin's.
Proof ???the shelves are bloody empty in the supermarkets and we are being told that there is no demand.......honestly credit us with some sense

What's foot and mouth got to do with slaughter staff refusing to work due to the virus?

Take it you own a few mart shares I do too, but auctioneers blaming abattoirs for the price drops due to the virus is bull poo

Why are the shelves empty? Surely they have had enough time to sort themselves out . That is over a week now and the supermarket shelves are still empty ,the local butchers meanwhile are double shifting and putting on night shifts to ensure they have product on the shelves methinks the supermarket business model has broken down, just when it was needed most!!

If there was a trust issue the likes of Woodheads etc would get no stock. I am pro mart too, but when auctioneers tell fairy stories and blame meat wholesalers it's not on.
I have total total mistrust for the meat industry...been shafted many times...if these shelves are empty we are missing out on many 1000s of £s worth of sales...I have not forgot how they treated me in the foot/mouth year..and many times since

If you sell dead weight always sell to an abattoir where the man on the scale is not related to the owner or does not have a financial interest in the business ;) you will be fine.

All our store cattle go dead weight to a few Irish owned firms never had an issue in over 25 years. Lambs we kill ourselves or go to the mart.

Take away that stupid 6 day rule and give people the choice on how to sell and the auctions would get far more trade, one holding number and it's either buy or sell, restraint of trade in any other industry, probably ours too if anybody wanted to challenge it.

Most of your posts are antagonistic and its strange that you have moved onto this thread but i think we will see a sea change in peoples cooking habits as boredom kicks in, many will try cooking better meals. Gardening is seeing the same revival with everybody now at home and bored, so why not cooking.
All the trolls on here never post pics never give anything away , all hide behind a shitty name and spend their time antagonising others hiding though In case they get recognised in real life, something I can’t help notice , no contribution other than arguments.
