Your auctioneer is talking rubbish and is creating unnecassary suspicions and hatred between farmers and meat wholesalers;

1) Abattoir staff are failing to turn up or are refusing to work, if the abattoir closes they will still receive 80% of their income, so why should they put their families at risk? Therefore abattoirs are struggling to keep lines going.

2) To confirm this point all members of staff walked out of a poultry plant in Ireland today.

3) Would the auctioneer use his personal money to purchase £250,000 worth of lamb and fill a chiller for export, knowing full well the government may introduce further restrictions on movement overnight?

4) Abattoirs already have chillers full of lamb and ewes which were purchased at peak prices last week, which they are struggling to sell without taking a big hit.

Tell your auctioneer to concentrate on his own job as a few meat companies will be going bump soon and may take his mart with them. However, if he feels that the meat trade is lucrative maybe his mart should purchase an abattoir and show the rest how it is done. A few marts have done this in the past and we all know how it ended.
Most auctioneers thought sheep had got too dear anyway and a price adjustment was always going to happen. Most are on first name terms with the meat firms and send bought in/not sold animals to them so theres abit of bull s##t on all sides. We need both , to keep the other honest in reality. If firms had there way they would have less farmers with larger amounts of animals so they could control it all better , cattle jobs getting there already. Markets are a thorn in those prospects thankfully.

Have you heard auctioneers saying it's the farmers fault? But they are quick to stir it and blame wholesalers, when the virus, staff shortages and movement restrictions are beyond their control.

Farmers lost all trust in the proccessors after what happened in 2001.

That trust will never be regained regardless of the next months that will be very difficult for everyone but the supermarkets.

Local Morrisons has had no delivery of beef or lamb for the last week, I asked the meat manager why today, reply was that the supply of cattle/ lambs from farms had stopped...

Why haven't Morrisons gone and done a deal to buy some of the meat/ mince etc that was destined for the likes of Maccy d for??

The majority of the European slaughter staff have left or are leaving. The others simply do not want to work when the government will guarantee that they will receive 80% of their wage, whilst sitting at home. Therefore the auctioneer was stirring sh17 and blaming meat wholesalers without any proof.

Farmers do trust processors that is the reason why so many have stuck two fingers up at the marts and have gone dead weight, with auctioneers behaving in this manner for once I fully support farmers for going direct, why pay commission and get messed about when you can send them in dead weight with prices guaranteed.

Having followed this thread for a few years it has become apparent that the marts create this distrust between farmers and wholesalers, in order to keep their gravy train running.
As I understand it they can only claim their wages if their employer has entered the scheme...I/e laid them off....otherwise they have to work

If you sell dead weight always sell to an abattoir where the man on the scale is not related to the owner or does not have a financial interest in the business ;) you will be fine.

All our store cattle go dead weight to a few Irish owned firms never had an issue in over 25 years. Lambs we kill ourselves or go to the mart.
How the hell are we going to find out who the man on the scales is related too ffs?

Company's can only claim the 80% if they fully shut down..

And it should be pointed out that no company's can yet even claim let alone pay the 80% wage cover, will be at least end of April into May before they will be able to do that!

To be honest i agreed with cancelling the sale...if the meat isnt wanted and they are full its pointless having it, be best telling them to just let us know when you want some and we'll start up again.

i sold deadweight for many years (lloyd maunders) who were honest and upfront ,would never consider going anywhere else (mike credland ? even got us into a new breed called charollais ) , even when i could have got more at mart (i had to drive past it on way to crediton)
we then went to other deadweight buyers when they shut and can honestly say i lost more money from bankruptcies and downright underhandedness that i will never sell direct again , and final straw , in particular F+M years (as mentioned many times above ) , thats was the thatcher / miners point with me , nearly every lamb i sold previously was E or U from pure charollais stock or dorset x char ,
APB sent me grading sheet after sheet of o and p lambs for those times (they were properly finished ) even some condemned with tapes (never had any before and my neighbour had the same deductions ) , made about £30 each  , first market open after , we were near top for price and been mentioned in dispatches ever since , Farmers and their families have long memories like miners , APB , dont expect any favours from me i dont trust them one bit .

Well something's wrong with the industry somewhere.ABP have been sat @£3.47 for weeks for cattle.yet shelves are empty, still no prise rise.when someone finds out there's horse meat in the mince the price rocketed.
Every excuse under the sun has been used to keep the beef job down and its all lies. If the shelves are empty wheres all the stockpiled brexit beef? Bullsh#t and lies from larry and Co. Lets stop sending any red meat for fortnight and see whats what.

I just can’t work out what people are going to live on unless it’s beans on toast. Just popped into local spar after not being able to get milk at 10 this morning, nearly sold out of meat and milk again.
Hardly any beef and lamb left in Tesco tonight.Plenty pork, but no chicken apart from 3 organic at £13 each. Beans and soup all sold out..........and mars and snickers.

I sent 240 lambs to ABP they agreed the price then changed it after the wagon had gone

Er, don’t WE employ the auctioneers to act on OUR behalf? I thought that’s what they were drawing a healthy commission for....

Why are the shelves empty? Surely they have had enough time to sort themselves out . That is over a week now and the supermarket shelves are still empty ,the local butchers meanwhile are double shifting and putting on night shifts to ensure they have product on the shelves methinks the supermarket business model has broken down, just when it was needed most!!
Simply because the restaurant / cafe/takeaway sector has closed down which maybe accounts for 30% of total food consumed... This has to be taken up now by supermarkets. Hard to do in a short space of time.
