I heard a snippet of news this morning on Radio 4 concerning something in todays Financial Times about the proposed trade agreement with the USA & a relaxation of standards to get the trade talks moving and in particular "agriculture ".Perhaps other forum members can put some meat on the bone on this one please !!

When are we going to learn, the UK public and government don’t care about British Ag. This is the reason I wanted to stay in Europe, so many people were passionate about things being better if we left! If this is the start of things to come it’s going to be interesting times.......

Doesn't say on what though. Could be fruit and veg and wine. Would be more of an issue for EU if that's the case. Devil's in the detail as ever.

If you applied the same logic, all the clothes we wear which are produced in the Far East with working practices and standards not allowed here would also be banned as would most consumer electronics etc...
Whilst I completely agree we shouldn't be importing produce of lower production standards, this would make world trade impossible.

We need to educate consumers they have a choice, we have or at least did upto Covid some of the richest consumers on the planet, many happy to pay an extra few pence for a picture of a fluffy rabbit on the package and a story to go with it.

You may have missed the numerous threads on here about the ag bill, passing through parliament yesterday. There were amendments proposed that, amongst other things, seeked to prevent the importation of ag products that were of lower standards than those produced here. Those amendments were voted against by the Conservative Party (mostly), opening the way to a free for all. Never mind, 'let's get this done', whatever the cost.

Best buy some shares in a Vaseline factory, we're all going to need plenty of it!

Like you say devil in the detail but I cannot wait for a California peach compared to rubbish that comes from Europe

Exactly, i ranted and raved about this before the brexit election, now its clear, the EU protect agriculture, westminster are only interested in the general public(where all the votes are), what farmer in their right mind would vote for this???

No not according to some on here! It’s not as if we have been on a level playing field with Europe and we need to import some food or we will starve and if the Americans replace what Europe has sent us in the past so what

Does that mean that if goods are produced to our standards they can come in?
I thought the current situation was that because the US uses hormones and antibiotics the meat wasn’t allowed here as it would bugger up our export to eu

Has it sunk in yet as to westminsters future intentions for UK ag????? it couldnt be clearer from where im standing these politicians have voted through a bill to stop area payments and have voted against proposed amendments which could save farmers from competing with imported ag products of...

The amendments that were proposed would have ensured that anything that came in would have to be up to the same standards (on a number of parameters, such as health & welfare, etc) as that produced here. Our elected government voted those amendments down, allowing them to negotiate trade deals that allowed chlorinated chicken, hormone treated beef, etc to come in.
