UK says it aims to join Trans-Pacific free trading group...

LONDON (Reuters) - The United Kingdom announced on Wednesday it would pursue accession to a revamped version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

“Today we’re announcing our intent to pursue accession to CPTPP, one of the world’s largest free trading areas,” Trade Secretary Liz Truss said.

The British government said joining CPTPP would help the UK overcome the challenge posed by the coronavirus and would help diversity its trade links.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a free trade agreement that links Canada and 10 other countries: Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

Once fully implemented, the 11 countries will form a trading bloc representing 495 million consumers and 13.5% of global GDP, according to the Canadian government. If the United Kingdom were to join, that share of global GDP would rise to about 16%.

Its 2 sides of the coin.
Heads , you're the disruptive child , what do they gain by accepting you.?
Tails, why would you leave a powerful trading group to join a less powerful one, what do they gain by accepting you?

I don't see the TPP as 'less powerful'. I see at as being a straight forward arrangement that has at least 2 major international players in it as well as other emerging countries where there is a good shilling to be made. The TPP, in a re-drafted format has been in place for some years now. There are some common regulations on the usual- intellectual property protections and the like, but a lighter touch than what the EU's agreement insists upon. This is all available on the web.

That's what people don't get, or choose to ignore. What we joined was great but they decided to turn it into something completely different and give us no say in the matter.

If the EU want to enter into a free trade agreement with the UK, they are of course at liberty to do that. and it is totally allowed for within the WTO and TPP agreements.

Except, the EU don't want a free trade agreement. The idea of free trade scares the carp out of them.

I can't see the TPP being that intrusive given that China have expressed an interest in it.

Great , Wuhan wet market opens subsidiary at Worcester livestock mart. Bat and egg fryups now served.

We wouldn't have left a powerful trading block if they hadn't been intent on turning it into a federal state.

The EU is a complex union which seeks to protect its people and maintain trade while preventing commodity dumping, environmental dumping and social dumping .
Your government wants to play devil take the hindmost.
