@ollie989898 , I don’t really know where you are coming from. You clearly are of the view that EU is a protection “racket”, and as you said a few posts back, US is also protectionist. Now if EU and USA are protectionist, what do you think China are? Impossibly protectionist!!
Now let’s take Japan? Wow, there’s protection in armour playing.
So all that being given, what’s the UK plan of attack. Free trade ...... up against most of the economic power blocks, all hell bent on protecting themselves.
If I was on the UK side, I’d be looking at my cards and realising that the deck has been fixed by the house .......

Free trade is the answer. I've said it before. The more protectionist you are, the more insular you are the more difficult it becomes to sustain a worthwhile economic effort.

It's a very simple question of do you want a potential market the size of your own population or a chunk of 7 billion?

China can't fulfil all their needs domestically, why do you think they import so much stuff?

Yawn, the EU does not do free trade. It is nothing but a protectionist bastion trying to protect it's aviation, car manufacturing and food sectors who couldn't compete for toffee in a global marketplace.

Protectionism doesn't work long term and stifles innovation, whilst costing consumers and tax payers more. It is not really that different from living in the illusion that was the USSR.
So all those countries who have signed free trade agreements were duped by the EU ?

So UK go free trade. With who? The protectionists? I’m befuddled???

The EU is not about free trade and never has been. I suggest you investigate the terms of those agreements.
I suggest you learn the definition of free trade in the context of world trade and the WTO. To be clear, the “free trade deal” the UK is trying to negotiate with the USA is not a free trade deal afterall as it comes with elements of protectionism for both parties?

Covid has highlighted once and for all, that the wealth of a nation, is the health of a nation.
There are several sectors not least agriculture on your graph, which may not contribute huge tax revenues, but without which top tax generators would fail.
Whilst trade is primarily about economics, it cannot override a nations food, health, education security.

But that’s ok, if the Tory top table, and the Brexit free trade buccaneers want to destroy your agriculture sector. The plebs in tracksuits and afternoon jammies, can mop the chlorinated shyte off the lower shelves before plonking themselves in front of the TV for the next few days.
The rest of the population will just have to pay a lot more for Irish beef and cheese.
Don’t worry yourself about supplying us with your beef, there plenty of better quality beef about in the world! The reason your so against brexit is your about to lose your access to your biggest market and there is nothing you can do about it

No Sir! Your PM is going to buckle at the last minute. You will have a deal with EU .... .
Dressed up as EU caving in, with a flurry of fist pumping, hair ruffling, shifting from one foot to the other at the press conference, more hair ruffling, few more fist pumps ...... blah, blah, blah

Then of course the inevitable inquest!! Not to mention the PMQ dissection compliments of Starmer.
Oh ..... rumblings from the 1922 dinosaurs who still haven’t realised that the empire is a mere ash pile.

What a shame. Do you reckon they could get under American/Canadian ( @Blaithin ) feed lot beef?
Get under it?

Raise it?

Not hard to raise feedlot beef. UK grows a lot of feed grains, use them. Stop trying to grow canola and complaining everything wants to eat it and you aren’t allowed to grow GMO  (you is general, not you specifically caveman)

Ha.
What I meant was. That you can probably produce beef cheaper than the Irish, even without the implants. (Give the customer what they want).
And a lot of others in the world, even cheaper.
And yes.
We do, do "feed lot" beef ourselves, using grains and other "waste" products. Maybe not in big open paddocks. But in sheds with a few token grazers, on the home paddock, in front of the house.
Its just that many are too snobbish to accept their production methods aren't too much different.
