Scottish ploughing championships cancelled

Has any one asked for an event to which you aspire? I doubt it, its obvious that the usual show portion would not be on so a plain ploughing match would have been quite acceptable, but there is no mention of trying to arrange on of those!

The nationals are the show piece of the ploughing season, not as you put it a “plain ploughing match”! There is no real reward for holding a match more so at the moment when the potential risks are so high! I would also believe that the expenditure, if a match of this size had to be cancelled at the last minute due to a local lockdown would have a knock on effect for many years to come! The nationals always give the economy in the surrounding area a boost which helps brings local councils, businesses etc on board and helps with advertising and sponsorship which won’t be the case if you have no spectators! (believe it or not you can’t run a national match for free even with no spectators)! There is so much more to it than just getting a few ploughers in a field, and at the moment I don’t think you would be allowed a gathering of 200 +ploughmen/women and all the people required to organise and run the event. At the moment there is just far to much uncertainty to organise large scale events and you would hope in a years time we will be in a much better place with a lot more certainty on carrying out events! Holding a practice day with restricted numbers and everyone’s details collected before the event may be a possibility this year but will depend on if we manage to keep the virus suppressed!

Here is a reminder, they are held to find ploughmen to represent their countries in the world match, and that is nothing more than a plain ploughing match! The SOP actually held a qualifier some years ago, due to the national being cancelled due I believe to weather. This managed two widely differing things, first it produced the two English Reps to attend the world, it also showed up that the razmatazz surrounding the original event was in no way essential in attaining the desired outcome.
I am not for one moment suggesting that this plain, one class qualifying event should become the norm, but, if the the organisers of both events had decided at the outset that there was no hope of the usual quality show being allowed, and had concentrated on working out how to hold a qualifier, that could have been done, thus keeping the date and event in peoples minds. There is also the poss problem with running something later in that the weather will be far from the best.Though in the case of our national, it could hardly be worse than that at the last two events!
Regarding the virus, I am of the belief that it will be here next year, and for many years after! Its the common colds big brother, and there is no vaccine for that, and never will be, as it mutates so often, initially a vaccine may be found, at which point the virus will mutate, and the research will have to start again! It will have to be lived with, and there is no time to loose in finding out how!
As down here we are rapidly returning to near normal, perhaps you should hop over the border to hold your School day!

I really cant see anything in my posts to cause you such angst. I admit the faceache debacle had degenerated to a shouting match, and I have deliberately tried to keep comments moderate, polite, and constructive.
Sorry, no we are not "going again". I will in concluding, point out that by the time many of the cancelled matches should have run, the government expects to be allowing spectators at sporting events. So you can join football, cricket, boot sale crowds etc, but ploughing matches are still off the menu!

Harry, for goodness sake heed all the good advise given to you. You have already been banned from Facebook and before you know it you will have upset so many ploughing societies including the Society of Ploughmen that you will not be welcome at any of the matches across the country.
