I have been trying to talk my brother out of his family holiday to tenerife for weeks now. Unfortunately they got suckered by the general advice not to cancel their holiday earlier this year because if they cancel they lose their deposit but if the travel agents cancel they get all their money back. Because they delayed there is a clause that says that if they cancel within a certain timeline they still have to pay 70% of the holiday cost even if they don't go! I informed him of all the reports of people turning up for their package holiday to find that their hotel is closed under governmental instructions. These people either had to sleep on the beach or pay hundreds for alternative accommodation that they had to organise!!! Luckily, after they looked into it, the travel agents cancelled the holiday as the hotel is closed until september. I wonder what would have happened if they hadn't started looking into it. I offered to pay my brother for his holiday because I would rather have them alive than three thousand in the bank! I can't believe people are putting their families at risk for the sake of a bit or sun that they can probably get next year with the benefit of a vaccine!
teneriffe is a tricky one - quarantine still applies from there but the FCO don’t have an “essential travel only” advisory out, like they do for mainland Spain, which means that travel insurance won’t pay out if you don’t go. Sounds like he had a lucky escape.
UK travellers from Spain must now quarantine for 14 days
The UK 'travel corridors' scheme fell into chaos as new rules were imposed on Spain, but the Foreign Office encouraged travel to the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands.
