You arent aware of anybody that actually likes mules and finds them better and more profitable than any other breed......but believe it or not they are out there, the mule isnt the most popular and widespread sheep in the country for no reason you know...or because it has a pretty face🙂
Can’t beat a mule for getting numbers of lambs sold. No messing about with 150% like some other breeds consistently getting over 180 % here with mules .

I'm sure that there will be folks out there breeding mules which will keep their teeth and live to a ripe old age and if you can find them, they will certainly be sheep worth having. Unfortunately, most of the mule trade will hinge on facial markings and presumably sheer size where commercial points may be an afterthought.
Of course they're not all wrong. If you get the right ones in the right system, I'm sure that they'll do a good job. But that is a major testament to the power of hybrid vigour IMO. The horned breeds have mucked about with BS like plucking white hairs and focusing or horn angles for far too long. I don't know a lot about BFL breeding but I'm sure it's a lot more art than science. I believe the breeders doing any proper recording are a tiny minority (and big plaudits to them!). And then there's the mysterious appearance of the 'crossing type'...

Mules are bought on reputation. And exactly the same goes for BFL tups. No amount of recording will change that.

And just out of interest, if you had a flock of BFLs, what exactly would you record? Alternatively, you could leave it up to your customers (Blackface, Cheviot or Swaledale men) tol decide whether or not to buy them on how they perform, not on any recording you might do.

Where in what you've quoted did I say there are none last longer than 4 years :ROFLMAO:

You are confirming I did indeed say what I said. Laws of averages, flocks replacing 25% of their flock every year means 4 years is about right.

You enjoy jumping down people's necks?
I was only adding balance to the argument that mules don't last very long

If you want to make money get a mule.....if you want to get your name in the paper and make people think your making money with your £120 single go down the tex/beltex route.
Speaking of which....people slate the bluefaced Leicester tup for being soft but what about the beltex?
We bought a beltex for a few hoggs and the man said when we collected ' when you move the sheep make sure the tup rides in the trailer, it will get short of wind or have a heart attack if it walks🤔😂
Think the beltex must be the softest breed going...one or 2 seasons and there done.

Talk about a non functional animal!

@MJT is the man to speak to for beltex that don’t need mollycoddling.

I would agree on the Beltex’s faults, but hardly a comparable situation.

it’s one thing having a terminal sire that has functional issues, as long as they bring something desirable to the table, it’s quite another to incorporate functional issues into the genetics of the breeding ewe flock.🤐
