Autumn?
I don’t like having many left after July..
Even with 320 ewe lambs lambing this April I’ve only got 220 lambs left on farm after weaning 🤷‍♂️

I think people need to go more closed flocks if they want to continue with mules with good longevity. I buy in 50 glamorgan welsh Ewe lambs every other year From the same farm. I put my BFL rams on them to produce my own mules. The welsh ewes are superb and will do well on the rough parts of the farm..

you’re in the land of milk and honey where the grass only takes a rest for Xmas day. They should be gone by May 😉

Did any one see the post about aberfeild ewes broken mouthed 2016 born?
Kicked up quite a storm much to the pleasure of some mule breeders.
Going through my own ewes today I found alot of 2015 born ewes broken and finding a correct mouthed 2012 born ewe a rarity.
I was talking to a man when I was 19 about this, his advice, if your breeding your own females, make sure the ram you use has 4 good feet and walks well, and make sure his teeth, at yearling stage are less than three eights of an inch in length, breed etc is up to you, but I've stuck to this since, ever get a ewe broke, before 6 or 7,might wear down but still got teeth, I have a 10 year old Beulah ewe, full set of teeth, looks old, but has a lamb on her which is her 21st, only get fed in bad weather, hay, crystalyx from 8 weeks out, I should add I would like a couple thousand like her.

Surely any competent sheep farmer has a method of identifying each age group of sheep - a lug mark, horn burn, or coloured tag.

And it's surprising how often folk think a ewe is broken mouthed just because she's lost a milk tooth.
When I started out, a few years ago now before tags, I use to buy broken mouthed Welsh ewes, 5 percent always turned out to be yearlings, culled as broke, but hadn't cut there teeth.

With a crap gob he shouldn't be going anywhere but too kill!! A self respecting tup breeder shouldn't sell a tup too breed unless it's right. No wonder breeds go down the pan! 😞
As a fella once said to me, well more than one fella..." how can 2 breeds as rubbish as a leicester and swaledale produce something as good as the mule"🙂
Hybrid vigour must be the answer!

Thats probably where mule breeding is an art all of its own.....you can, and often do, find that the ugliest looking leicester tup with a back like a camel and teeth you could hang a bucket on gets the best mule sheep....and sheep with good teeth at that!

They sold the whole mule flock in one go, every single animal, and bought a large amount of easycares, they received an awful lot of flack for it and I believe lost some good friends over it.
That`s a sad state of affairs when "good friends" feel like that - can just about believe it though. People must be allowed to try something different and if they can make it work well hats off to them! Sometimes we can all learn something from someone bold enough to try something new instead of just doing what everyone else does purely because "we`ve alus done it that way"....
We might all have to look to our calculators by the time Boris and Co have finished.....

Yes, they are very hardy. Well very hardy mostly, but when they get sick they just die.
Lamb survival is very good and ewe behavior at lambing is very good. I've a handfull of DorperXFinTexel ewes and they are exceptional ewes.
Is there any research which Dorper is the hardest Black headed or White? Also is the White larger than the Black headed?

I think some of this ill feeling is that people don't like to have that seed of doubt planted in their mind that what they are doing is not the 'best' or most profitable course of action, despite having done it for years. If you're breaking your back taking wool off sheep only to sell it for a pittance and some smartarse over the fence doesn't need to bother...

But who the hell would use a tup like that in the first place, if it looks hellish and has a bad mouth?

I can’t help it, when I see Easycares on good ground I just think it’s a waste.

It wasn’t like that bought and spending a lot of cash on something bends the mind “Expensive Tup Syndrome”. Mind you, there is also “cheap lamb syndrome” where you don’t fully back yourself to use an obvious bargain because others didn’t make it expensive enough for you. You can’t win.
