I'm very happy with him. Fingers crossed there are no lambing difficulties. Single copy myomax as well.
My thoughts on myomax continue to evolve... I think that it has an effect, but it is fairly marginal in any given animal, only making a significant difference across a flock. I have a very good double myomax ram, but I've another that has a good meaty conformation and, as far as I know, he has no claims on carrying myomax.

Their lambs, from evenly mixed ewes, are more or less the same so, when I cull on factors away from known genetics - shedding, tail length etc. - it's a hard call as to what to keep as replacements. But, with the ram lambs sold as stores, there is a notable difference favouring the myomax ram.

Terminal Easycare rams anyone...? :joyful:

This is why I want to breed it into the flock ASAP. Start those marginal gains sooner.

Myomax ---
Myomax vs gd ram.png

Here's some data of lambs from a Myomax (double) carrier vs a non carrier
Non carrier's lambs have much more muscle and better scan weights
Crap ram with Myomax is still a crap ram
Myomax is one of many many genes effecting carcass quality ----good thing is that it is a gene that has a simple identifying test

To add to the above re-myomax
It's the hard & tedious work of recording and selecting year on year that makes the progress not the breeding for 1 gene

You're of course correct.

But it's a gene which is easily identifiable and has a positive effect. For me grading up from a base hill ewe, it makes sense to introduce it into the flock from the beginning.

Shedding is similar. A crap shedding sheep is still a crap shedding sheep. But it's a single trait which can be easily identified and focussed on. Once the entire flock are shedding well then I can move onto the next trait.

Good to see repeat customer @unlacedgecko this morning and new customer @Bill dog this afternoon when I delivered his tup. On the downside, it was rather dangerous going in with Bill dog's Hereford x stirks. I tripped over one :D

Anyone looking for a performance recorded, grass-fed woolshedding tup this year please get in touch as they are selling fast, or if you are mulling over taking the leap from wool sometime in the future.

Great to see you again too! The shortlist of tups you prepared to my requirements was exactly what I was looking for. I won't hesitate to buy blind in future.

Very happy with my new boy, and excited to see what he produces from these girls.

Was going to post a picture of the ram you picked up for us but the bugger jumped the fence and hid in the polytunnel! Cant say he isn't a fit and strong ram.
Yes, he's a bit of a handful as I said! Other than that, exactly what I'm trying to breed. A bit of hard feed will change his opinion (once he learns what it is!).

Thanks to @pgk and @texas pete for their custom. All sold out in eight days!
