Older off road 4x4

Could you make 2 that are smaller. Route might be the thing start at easiest steeep bit to get to want work down

Whays the budget

Honestly there's no fixed budget, it was a thought borne out of safety more than anything else. With the comments so far I think you might well be on the button about making two smaller ones. It also fits in with my theory on stock adaptability to their environments, why fight what works.

I was going to suggest a 35 rather than a 4x4 but sounds like you have tried that. My next suggestion would be a SWB Terrano but having had both for many years (still got both actually) I think my 35 will go more places than the Terrano.

One hell of a place you have there John! From previous posts I knew it was a bit extreme but that is a fantastic pic. Not sure I would want to try farming it though. :D

It's land that forces people to think outside the box, usual solutions usually don't apply. Depending on what % of gut busting is going on I have a love/hate relationship with the place. It's been neglected for a long time and only recently came into my ownership proper. I know what it's capable of as many butcher lambs came from there.

Have you tried for any stewardship schemes then walls would look great rebuilt like new

I'm slowly building them up, perhaps not to their original height but enough to be functional. I have drilled a lot of stones and put rebar posts in them with insulators for electric fencing to paddock graze. I believe they would only have had to hold quieter stock in times gone by and most modern day less handled stock would just jump and knock them again without the electric. They're a lovely if sometimes inconvenient feature.

A caravan chassis on normal caravan wheels will feel like you're towing a lot more than a ton on ground like that!

Yes true, I had planned to get studs to put dual wheels on it.

first thing i would do is get a better axle on it , caravan will beach on every rock outcrop , need good clearance or you will rip the floor out in no time , be better to make up a shepherds hut , you can let it out for holidays if the chickens go wrong lol

I don't have fabrication skills, so I've been trawling the sales ads online. Caravan chassis come in around E200 but it's a point for sure about the height. I've nothing built or bought yet so everything is subject to change. Tourism is something on my mind also, as a value adding measure to another new enterprise........................ come milk a cow on a micro dairy featuring a rare breed. I've never milked a cow either, but that's what YouTube was made for ;)

Would you not be better off with a old horse box

They want big enough money for scrap tbh. I'm not ruling it out yet though as double axles would be better than single in many ways.

Beautiful place , the yank tourists would love a bit of rural tourism on a place like that . Tell them it inspired “ inishfree” from the Quiet Man , and that John Wayne played cards with your Grandpa!
Then sell em some eggs out a gypsy type cart, and have some stay in a gypsy caravan!
Or not !
If it’s right boggy, could you get a twin axle quad bike trailer Chassis or 2 for a base. They would carry over the ground way better than a caravan!

Or even get a horse to drag them around?

Actually a pair of ponies/horses is something we're considering today, though it would mean a total redesign of the eggmobile itself (including to incorporate a higher axle as suggested by someone), it could be a good idea for the tourism side as I'd seen mobile milking parlours (tiny) also.

On the idea of skids, I wonder would that add undue strain as regards the hills. The photo is deceptive.

The old boy who was on our place before us ( he died in 1985) never bought a tractor, used a horse where he could, box cart on fat pneumatic wheels, dickie hay turner, hay rake etc. He had a sledge made of corrugated iron for use in the snow when he had a milk round. Just wondering if two wide long skids made of corrugated iron, turned up at the sides as well as the ends wouldn't pull easier than wheels, and the ribbing would help stop sliding sideways?

I would have stuck with the MF35, the zetor 4wd is a good option. I can't see a suv outpulling 2wd tractor without a lot of custom work.

I'd put it on skids, THREE short skids, two on the back half of the sides, and one in the middle front. You'll need some ground clearance for it to have any chance of surviving.

Other question: what are the chickens supposed to benefit from the rugged scenery? are they paying guests? or is this a fertilization scheme? I'm assuming you know you'll need to supply all of their calorie needs with grain, it might be easier to haul the grass to them.

Hi, This is Mark J. Lemmon. I'm Experts to help you in the choice of your tractor Brands and all Things About tractor.

This is essentially what four-wheel drive does. It gives you traction where and when you need it. Although 4WD is a bit more complicated than that, it’s essentially a way to increase traction and power on the road.

Thanks Mark.
