Mules are still supreme

What I don’t get is that the buyers can’t see through the trimmed out necks, bloom and mega feeding. Can’t blame the breeders for supplying them though.
Clipping and colouring don't really need to be seen through, people aren't stupid.

As for feeding that's all relative and in the eye of the beholder, sheep that are grazed well on aftermath could be classed as fed up for sales compared to those on badly managed or upland grazing.
Plenty of people could take my rotationally grazed sheep and put them on rank seeded PP and they'd probably looses condition, does that make me a bad person for having them in a state where they could go backwards if management changes.

They need to be clipped and coloured or you would be laughed out of the mart. They look so much different

not true for me. The leading pens with the balls to be different would see a better trade. The guy who can’t be arsed to turn them out can’t be arsed at every stage of the process, generally speaking, and has poorer sheep. I can only talk about Builth, but if you see a pen of good sheep, poorly presented and think “right, there’s bang for the buck in them” and every other f**ker seems to have the same idea...

How are these sheep cropping percentage wise and how do they compare for lambing ease and maternal instinct?
Scanned at 203%last year, defiantly less than mules which one year was 235%but I'm not upset about not having 200 pet lambs. We don't go for extreme types so lambing ease not much of a problem. I don't find maternal instinct too bad, I'm sure mules used to be better but maybe rose tinted spectacles in that respect.

if you keep the muley looking ones you can go three or four crosses without any bother.

If you're selling gimmers at £170 replacement lambs at £100 aren't so bad.

A lot of runners buy at the first sales, not the 2nd. Ewe lamb averages were nearer £130.

As usual, this time next year, these boys will be moaning about the kicking they've just taken on this year's lambs because of the guaranteed drop in trade next year

I see no point in spending 130 quid on a sheep that has a year with nothing to do.
When I used to run hammering lambs I used to buy late lambs.

If gimmers are back next year so will lambs so they'll be fine, they should be used to the game by now.

Guys selling gimmers at £170-£180 were spending £75-£90 on good gimmering lambs last year. I’m glad they got a good go this year but it wasn’t as fun selling these good lambs last year!
