The IH / Case Thread

What did the 674 have in?
You have the answer which is just as well because I don't know !
I was working at Severn Engineering from 1976-80 there was no mention of engine numbers just tractor model numbers
In the 4 years I was there I remember only 2 engines overhauled a 674 and
474 which was a known bad engine but plenty of clutches and hydraulic repairs

Yes it should go straight in. You can even fit a 6 cyl engine if you change the engine/clutch housing adapter plate. The front end is more complicated as I have found.

100b we have just got running

Would anyone know of a redundant 56 series hydraulic tank dipstick please. A senior moment the other day, I had just topped up the tank and forgot to replace the cap/dipstick and remodelled it with the assistance of the rear wheel.

Yes, I know, what a dipstick, Angus.

I have a Case 895 xl with back pressure problems. I’ve filled it with K seal to keep me going as I was using it to feed up and clean cattle out. It’s still being used. Am I better off with a new head (assuming it’s a head gasket) or plaining the existing head?
Ive seen new heads for sale for £400 ish but not sure if they are any use. I’m wanting it back up and running sharpish if possible

Unless it has been seriously overheated,it probably only needs a head gasket.

Is radiator clear or blocked?
Has tractor done a lot of work?

Been doing a bit more with the 574 recently, thought I'd share some experiences and a couple of questions.

I dropped the loader off, and I mean dropped! We have the proper stand but I didn't have the bucket pushed up against anything which I have now found is a requirement. All was going well as I backed away but then the bucket slid forward and the frame hit the deck. Having had a google of this since it appears I'm not the only one to have done this!! Anyways we propped it back up and got it reattached later on. Will now remember to prop it against a wall!

The reason for dropping the loader off was to go and do some topping on a meadow near the house. I'm hoping to tidy this up to maybe cut some hay off next year once I've acquired some equipment. We have a Woods topper which went really well on the 574.

Then the loader went back on and we tidied up some soil piles.

Now a couple of questions:
What does the GEN light mean on the dashboard? (picture below). When I start the tractor after not running for a few days it comes on and stays on for a while, maybe half an hour of low rev engine running or so then goes out.

The tractor has been running really nicely and starting well, apart from once when it wouldn't restart which I traced back to the tap on the bottom of the fuel tank RHS being blocked, soon sorted with a squirt of airline. One problem is that the tachometer/rev counter doesn't work; it doesn't move at all. This obviously doesn't stop anything working, but eventually I'd like to use the tractor on a Varispreader and knowing the correct PTO speed would be handy. Any tips on where to look to get this working again?

I'm going to give it a good clean before winter and maybe touch up some of the paint, mainly on the wheels. Hopefully next year this tractor will be used for a bit of farming which I'm looking forward to

We used to have a 674 which is very similar to yours. The generator light on the dashboard when lit means that the battery is not being charged so may need a reconditioned alternator. Rev counter not working is most likely a broken cable, ours did it once.

It's possible the alternator is buggered
But it could be new brushes are alll is needed, is fanbelt ok?
The drive cable for rev counter might need renewing and the only way to check is disconnect at rev counter but if it doesn't work the gearbox at front
Could be faulty, but getting to underneath of rev counter is not easy and requires some dismantling
The oil gauge is showing good pressure

Thanks both. The light does go out after a little while, so is it case of just slow charging? Always has plenty of go when I go to start it.

Might tackle the rev counter in the winter when I don't need the tractor as much and it can be in bits for a while. Would it involve taking the cover off from around the dash/steering column sort of area?
