Canary seed

Do you DD into the residue or bale it ?
This time I DD Trit straight into residue/thick volunteers. Chopped the straw.
Straw hangs around a long time so bales or shallow incorporation may be better. It formed a mat in places thus preventing the soil from drying so I borrowed a rake - did the job

Anyone cut their canary? Reckon I got about 1.2 t/ha versus last years 2t/ha. Getting it into into perspective its a damn sight better than It looked in May. Still a bit of profit I think

Finished cutting ours last Thursday, think it’s done about same as you 1.2t/ha, it’s been over the Weighbridge but I’ve not had chance to check the tickets yet. Looked like it was going to do a lot better but found a lot of empty heads! Not sure if the late frost combined with drought stress may have affected some of the early heads. Either way it should turn a small profit so will be staying for another year.

£380/t

Find me a break crop that’s cheap and easy to grow, makes a big profit and I can follow with wheat and I’ll grow that instead

I don't think Static was commenting with regard to a 'big profit' Phil P but more lifting an eyebrow wondering if there was any profit let alone a small profit at 1.2t/ha at £380 tonne. I appreciate the variable costs are quite low for Canary Grass although I have lost track of seed price per hectare. But the fact you suggest the crop is making a profit tells us plenty about your business overhead cost structure and land occupation costs (owned/mortgage/rent) Cheers.

Yes, sorry, was just wondering how we never made a profit at double the yield. £450/ha output.

Not saying it wasn't profitable for you. But the details provided have always India cared that yield ought be between 1.5 and 3t/ha which produces a gross margin similar to linseed ie not a great deal!

Was always, seed, avadex, blw spray, pgr, dessicate for us.....plus rent and work.
