think prices are long overdue for a rise , but i dont see huge increases after the new year , maybe 10-20% , think the store buyers might break even or catch a cold this year , value is there now ! not sure increase is going to pay much towards treatments , movements and catch crops .though would love to see everyone in the chain profit for future investments .
thing is for once , breeders have the increase , how much does that affect profitability ? when your selling stores for £50-60, this will be reflected in what you pay for ewes and rams , so when its £90 +what do you give for replacements ?
i think the one good thing might be those with supermarket contracts will have to negotiate better prices next time , which will benefit the whole industry , its stagnated for decades .and at some point the tide has to turn .

Worth a look Australian prices are on a roll too.

Store lambs were strong in UA Stirling on Monday. Plenty of medium lambs trading at £2-2.40/kg. Lightweights anywhere up too £2.50 depending on breeding and style.
Very strong show of SBF in. A pleasure to watch them sold even if I didn't buy many. Good 20-22kg £40-£43 25-29kg £48-£54 30kg+ £56-£60 depending on the lambs. Some little tiddlers in 16-18kg looked very dear £20-£30.
Ewes weren't too bad. Bought fairing of SBF ewes at handy feeding money.

I'm not liking speculating my money on sheep this dear but I can't stop the wheel. Just cool it down a bit. Bought a thousand up too now, average will be up £8/9 on the year and I've bought no medium keeps. All long term jobs or feeding ewes.
All my winter keep men expect me too turn up with X amount of sheep and graze them off. Some of them have grown green crop for me which needs eating. If I don't make sure they are stocked up they will get someone who will eat it off and that will be the last I see of that keep!
Got my fingers crossed for a break even year with a touch of profit come March/April.
I don't mind paying £20 more for my ewe lambs too tup. Over the life of the sheep it's only £2/year so I can stomach that. I'd rather stick too the quality I want and pay for it, but run a few less than pay dear for stock not up too scratch and be looking at them for the next 5 years thinking "Jesus you lot were dear!"

Bakewell Market Monday 21st September

With the weather forecast suggesting that cold, wet and windy conditions are just around the corner many farmers decided it was time to sell, and we had 878 cattle and 2,621 sheep on offer. It is pleasing to report that every animal changed hands.

The Store & Breeding Cattle department was well supported with a total of 582 head. Trade generally good, but longer-term cattle looked better value, perhaps the straw shortage is preying on people’s minds. Short finish cattle were just as dear as they have been bolstered by the prevailing finished cattle trade.

Steers reached £1,190, Heifers £1,340 and Feeding Bulls £1,210.

In the Breeding Stock section Cows & Calves peaked at £1,850 and Stock Bulls £1,650.

A useful turnout of 114 Finished Cattle with top figures 250p/kg and £1,759 per head.

The heifer average looking good at 202.1p.

OTM and Feeding Cows were out in force with 123 on offer. Top figures 185p and £1,676. The average emerged at 123.0p.

59 Calves this week with bulls to £405 and heifers £270.

The Sheep department was the busiest it has been for a very long time on a Monday with 2,621 on total.

The 1,880 lambs sold on a solid trade with top figures 249p and £118.07. The SQQ average looked healthy at 210.2p

Cull Sheep were also abundant with 642 forward. Trade was good too with ewes to £149 and the average £71.48.

We had finished heifers to 227p and 226p, which we were pleased with.

We popped to bakewell Monday as we had an overnight stay in the peaks and it looked fairly busy at the market. The town was very busy for a Monday too with the open market. Far too busy for me especially in the current situation so we left sharpish

Dad said it was busy when he took them down, had to queue to unload and queue back through town. Bakewell now has a massive catchment area, they closed Hope and Ashbourne to build it and since then Uttoxeter, Chelford, Derby and Newark have all closed. They should and could cope with these numbers (and more) if the auctioneers pulled their fingers out and pushed themselves rather than assume people will just turn up.
The town centre is always busy during the summer, packed with tourists!
