lime costs

Was it cheap?
Pete, was that question to me? I posted a thread a while ago about if you remember and the feeling of the collective was that it was going to be very expensive as I probably wont get any benefit from a lot of it for a very long time. ust found the weigh ticket - the orange 'grit' came from Guiting Quarry, Cheltenham. I'm embarassed, but I was charged the same as @texelburger was quoted. Upshot is that Ive changed contractor rather than fall out about it and have now had a further 250 tonnes from somewhere else that I am far happier with.

Hi,
Our Lime ,which has just been spread, came from the Oathill quarry. It does have a little gritty bits in it but most of these can be crushed with your fingers. There is a small amount of pebble but overall I'm reasonably pleased and think it will do the job.

sounds in the right ball park. Transport is a fair chunk of the cost. We farm on the back slope of a disused limestone quarry yet it seems the nearest suitable lime has to come from half way across the country

I nearly said it would be from Guiting. To be honest, it’s complete crap. I had two loads delivered to a job and was embarrassed with it so much I did the job for cost price, offered to resample in two years and if lime was needed I would discount that too. I even offered to have it taken away but the customer was desperate to push on. He was very good about it.
It should have been about £4/t ex works.
What company supplied it?

Nothing to be gained by mentioning their name, I will just put it down to experience and go forward a little bit wiser (y)

The Lime ive used is from a Quarry in North Yorks some 120miles south of here & thru Agrii it was £21.25/ton (25p cheaper than i remembered) Just found invoice !!
Vari-Rate spread by my contractor of choice at £5/ton
The Lime is like flour its Calcium type & no issues
I used the same Lime last backend it was slightly cheaper then under £20.

that’s very true and not really fair of me to ask, my apologies. They may have been disappointed by it too.
We live and learn.
No fair enough to ask - I would have named for the sake of others but just don’t want to sour a long relationship. I fear they are not too worried though as I see they spread the same product for my neighbour a week ago .

Christ. That is truly rubbish.

On the VERY odd occasion I’ve found a few bits like that I’m straight on the phone and to their credit my main quarry will have it sorted ASAP.

They expect me to let them know if something is wrong and I expect them to sort it. They always then offer a suitable discount to the farmer or offer to collect and replace it.

Paid £10/ tonne ex works from Dowlow quarry near Buxton. It's owned by Breedon aggregates and they have another quarry close by at Ashwood dale, Buxton and that was £8.50/t.

120 mile haul isn’t costing £17/tonne!
15 - 16 delivered is about what I reckon it should be.Certainly not substandard and definitely calcium!

That must have been dug from the wrong heap or there are holes in their screens or something?! I've never seen anything like that except in an aggregate pile!

Bit of freeze and thaw mind and it will all be shattered to bits I suspect.
