Yes definitely a better board but you will need extra stays for the back and it is an expensive swap .

If you want to make a proper job of grass you want discs and skimmers all round.......
The 28 will definitely turn the furrow over better, it is 6’’ longer in the draught or middle part of the board than the 8, it also will take less pulling and leave the finished work firmer, you will need to change the stay and the rear angled bracket though, when swapping...only negative is the hole to fill from a 28, but other than that they are very good.
There is a 38 now too, but unless you need to plough deeper than 12-13’’ you’ll be fine!
I have seen people use just trash boards, and no skimmers very effectively on grass...you also have the option of a landslide knife but as above, discs on every furrow are the ultimate, just depends if you want to pay for them...

I'm also interested in changing our 5 furrow to 28s
Some have said you don't need the extra stay unless rocky ground? Or is it cheaper than replacing bust boards?

It’s not an extra stay, the stay on the 8 is not long enough and the end bracket has the wrong twist on it..., we would only fit double stays in strong ground, or sometimes on the front furrow, 9’s are ok...but try your local dealer! They might quote you happy!!!

its seems as if the Stay on the No.9s are the same length as on my 5fr with 28's on
By the way genuine 28 boards are £109 after discount from main dealer. £10 extra for all the nuts n bolts ontop! ive got a full set here

I was advised by several to use original boards as ive considered the much cheaper spurious ones from 3 places

87 I think is list price id get something off that for an order of 10 boards. But 109 genuine not far out

directly cross over wheat stubble that was heavily mucked last week before the 60mm of rain its had since... so a fair bit wetter now.
Without a doubt...they finish rolling the furrow, and slightly press the side of it too!
Just put 12 new genuine 28:s on ,£102 , all in ,

Bugger it must be 27yr since we had a kv plough with N0.8's on, had two ploughs with 9's on & still got that 1994 4 fr with them on yet. but 28's is the way to go now
more so coz of wider tractor tyres if nowt else, the N0.9 still makes a tidy job but leaves a tiny back furrow.

i asked a much bigger farmer outfit the other day what he paid & 100% same prices for all plough metal so thats what they must be.
