Simon Weaving came here yesterday afternoon and gave a very convincing demo, the drill performed very well in conditions I wouldn't have even considered cultivating and combi drilling. As the sun went down the conditions turned for the worst and the drills limits were tested, very impressive to see.

Great idea to start this thread @Bob lincs - thank you. I have a older style plastic hopper, three row Sabre tine (new to me this season) which has been good so far although depth setting is not very straight forward.
I am currently drilling wheat and can’t seem to get the fan speed above 4300rpm for no clear reason. Book says it should be 5000 for cereals...has anyone any experience of or solutions for this and will 4300 be sufficient for wheat?
Any help gratefully received! (Always happens on a Sunday morning with rain due on Tuesday...😳🤦‍♂️)

We’re running ours at 4500 with the front hopper so I would have thought 4300 with a rear hopper would be fine , is the seed coming out of the end coulters ok ?.

Thanks - interesting. Yes seed coming out ok at 4300 but can’t get a stable fan speed now. It’s all over the shop. Have tightened belts and checked everything on the drill so it looks like it’s a tractor oil pressure thing. Hoping to have it sorted first thing tomorrow morning...

really like the look of your set up though - would be ideal for me with a GD disc unit to swap in where necessary (like now...drilling into moved maize stubble is testing the tines a bit...)

Is your return in to a freeflow? If its in to a spool could it be creating back pressure? Oil requirement is only 35lpm so should be easily achievable. Is it piped in to the spool which gets priority oil flow?

Thanks - yes it’s on a free flow return and have tried it on every spool with same results. All worked fine a few weeks ago drilling rye...🙄

Could it have had a flow restrictor added to the pressure line?

I have put one on one of my drills because the tractors flow control wasn't stable enough when lowering the linkage and it was causing the fan to spin way to fast momentarily and setting of alarms. I have it set though at a limit a few hundred rpm above the maximum recommend and am normally running the fan quite a bit slower, set by the tractor spool.

Thanks for all your suggestions - the free flow return is indeed a bigger pipe into the back end, I meant that I had tried the smaller of the pair in every spool.
No flow restrictor fitted either.
Oil flow from tractor measured as normal.
We eventually narrowed it down to the hydraulic motor not holding sufficient pressure to drive the fan fast enough, possibly an internal seal issue according to Weaving.
Anyway, I ended up sticking a PTO shaft on and managed to get the last 100 acres of wheat in finishing late last night just before the rain...could do with a roll but will have to wait!

Any of you Sabre tine users on heavy clay soils? They look great bits of kit but would they smear on unmoved stubble
in strong land ?

We have been drilling straight in to stubble the wk on some fairly heavy land and I’m quite happy so far . The tractor wheeling are my biggest worry after 20mm of rain today but as it’s a tine and the seed isn’t at the bottom of the slot I think it will drain and be ok . 🙏

I drilled some rape in to wet barley stubble, closed the slot at drilling but reopened when it dried out, been much better where we have moved the top inch on our clay soils. Its does a great job on the lighter soil.

Going to move our cultivations up from an inch over the next few years and see if we can go direct in to clay once we have got some experience with direct drilling on the lighter. We will try it in to unmoved bean and linseed ground next season though and see how it gets on as they seem to leave it very friable.

So we did some moderate Mg index 7.5 stuff Tuesday straigt into stubble with our sabre tool bar and it closed really well but it had been dry for a few days, we then tried some properly nasty MG index 9.8 (1700ppm) stuff after 5mm yesterday and it cut slots so had to pull out. With my short experience it likes a bit of crumb or dry on top to drag over the seed. I think it would have been excellent at the start of the month and if we can get a dry top it might still go.

So i cannot see it not working on clay but like all clay its the timing

What are you moving the top inch with ?
