Outdoor pig rotation

Good evening,

I am thinking of buying 10 weaners or stores next spring. I intend to electric fence them into a patch of land let them turn it over and then move onto fresh patch. I have approx 1 acre to cover That I daren’t take a cultivator into.

How big of a patch would you give? How often will they need moving? Will 10 growing pigs do this over a summer? Finally how long will they take to grow and fatten depending what age I buy at? Old fashioned breeds is what I was thinking

I have a mains fencer and sheep fencing that is spare over summer

Thankyou

Maybe give them the whole lot, but feed them on the ground in different places every day, with rolled grains instead of sow rolls for example?
Can you get a load of muck spread on it now for them to work in?

Thankyou for the reply. I was thinking of feeding a bunch of sheep on this bit over winter to add fertility and they will have something to root through

I’ve currently got nine on about 1/4 acre and have been for a month they doing a great job but won’t need much more I don’t think , probably need more than ten to turn over an acre in reasonable time scale I think .

Well it depends a lot on what you want to do with this acre after the pigs are done with it, if you want it for grassland, I would advise you to set up a system dividing it into 4-6 different equally sized pens to where you can move them like every 4-7 days, this being because anytime pigs are left in area to long it doesn't matter how big or small the pen they will compact it to where recovery could take years. also how big do you expect these pigs to get? an acre isn't very much room so compaction may be inevitable but keeping it minimal could save you a lot of stress.
