Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Yeah never ever seen my stock sold drop them at 6am and get on with my day they’d owe me an extra £100 a day if I spent all day at market waiting for them to sell drinking tea and eating full English breakfasts dishing luck money out [emoji23]
Yes the drop and go system didn’t effect me as much as most others as I invented it. I value a days work not stood all day at a mart.
However having NO farmers at marts did see a big difference in trade so me not being there made no difference but having no farmers there made a big difference.
Unfortunately some auctions have started to advise drop and go from last week. I hope we don’t go back to enforced drop and go. Maybe it would help if some of us did drop and go make room for who needs to be there though.

That’s without mentioning buying stock that you didn’t need either but it was just too appealing not too buy it...

Drop and go saved me half a hour in bed too you didn’t get folk stood around the weigh scales talking for hours on end when all you wanted to do was throw your paperwork at someone else and hit the road! [emoji23]

Yeah same here, been going dead for best part of twenty years but change of management and a few difference’s of opinion at the abattoir saw me selling back at market this year and didn’t mind drop an go at all, me being there not gonna effect price with my commercials, unless you’ve got spivs an can butter up a little butcher into buying yours can’t see the point in standing about all day if you’ve got work on at home!! Selling stores a different job though, wouldn’t leave them unattended

I do leave stores a bit more risky though. Once I get over 10 cattle or 100 sheep I’m more inclined to stay not always though.

I am interested in those that never stop to see their stock sold, I understand if you have very small numbers, but 20 lambs making £10.00 less than they should is £200!!!
I would never ever think of not seeing mine sold, however down here the buyers may not be as "fair" as in other parts of the country. One has to remember that down here we are a long way from the main abattoirs and unless you have high end export quality then you can get screwed as there is little competition.
I do wonder how you know what value your stock are unless you see other peoples sold to compare?
Market reports as we all know are not really that accurate!!

I very often put a reserve on or bid myself and am never afraid to take stock home if I think they are worth more. Some types of lambs, especially those that are poorer conformation often will have only one buyer at the auction and unless there is a farmer/dealer buying stores these can go for a low price if the auctioneer is not on the ball!

Well farming a time related business and standing around is dead time and actually harder than being at work.
It makes no difference if you are there or not the only important thing is the sorting of lots/types.
I may look at it differently to others but with a lot of stock and big acerages to cover you are never done with work so I’m not inclined to waste time.
You can leave reserves.
Others with work in volume do the same.

I left an artic load of hoggs in April years ago but they were a good trade at the time. I’ve done it on a few occasions with numbers
Fat you mean? If your lambs are in spec an fairly presented you should have the average trade at least really, ours is a red market any way so you couldn’t bring them back if you wanted!! I know sometimes they nick a pen but if I can have the average trade I’m happy, you have to take the ups an downs of the trade when you need to be selling lambs most weeks! My humble view only

I love the morning at the market.... Eating a dirty full English in the cafe washed down with a coffee is one of life's full pleasures... BUT..... Most importantly it's where I get my education these days, we sit round the table in the cafe, talking about dos, donts & it's surprising what u can learn from talking & listening to other people...

rubbish mate. Best thing I ever started doing was standing in the pen of fat lambs & slipping the buyers a twenty.... Most the time it's not their money they spending & once I started doing that I was never disappointed. £2/3 on 50/60 lambs worth staying there. Besides work work work no time to stand around..... Chill out mon, when ur on your death bed I don't suppose you'll be thinking dam I wish I'd have worked a bit harder........ 🤣🤣
