Fist thing, is the money pledged really new and is it actually going to go to the armed forces or disappear in Tory party sponsors pockets for more phantom tec project's. If they want to do something for the RN, recruiting enough sailors to fully man the ships they already have would be a start. But the plan for the RN seems to be quantity over quality with what sounds like a new version of the Lidl class frigates, although it looks like they will now commit to all 8 type 26's originally ordered. :scratchhead:

Commentary I heard yesterday, suggested £13 billion to catch up, leaving £3.5 billion for new spend.

To be fair, any nation should have the ability to both feed itself and defend itself. Without those basics covered, it is ripe for the taking by whichever aggressive nation fancies it.

Of course civilised society has meant that hasn’t happened anywhere, well not for a year or two anyway. Putin lopped a strategic chunk of Ukraine a few years ago without much more than a few huffs and puffs from the neighbours.

Yes, I have often thought about this 'defend the UK from invasion thing' and just pondered how the Russians (as it is they who we are talking about) would get there army of invasion across 2000 miles across several European countries and then stage a beach landing, so presumably requiring a large Navy with assaults ships etc, having arranged for kindly European nations to allow their troops and military vehicles to embark. Likewise China - even longer to do this. Funny old world.

That’s what I meant. Taking back the Empire one bit at a time. By the end of it I won’t have to queue in the Bank anymore a flash of my passport and all doors open.

It was great days when a British passport meant something. You kind of knew that you weren't going to be stopped at a border and tin pot officials respected it. A few weeks ago I had to go and pick my permit to stay in France, standing outside for an hour in a long queue of economic migrants from Africa all doing the same, you now realise what it's actually worth today.. :(
