Especially when there’s not many about.
When the price rises they come out of the woodwork.... I think if you can get over £100 at this time of the year off grass then may as well let some go....yes I think they’ll be £140 next spring but that’s 5/6 months away and anything can happen by then....which this year has proven

thing is , do you cash ewe hoggs next spring if price is flying ? or hold out for good a 2t price , 2019 high spring price , poor 2t price , 2020 high spring price , high 2t price ,
might be the year to cash ewe hoggs again , as too many will be kept following on from this year , letting 2t price drop a bit over original fat price .

Cash. They are never worth much more as 2t. This year was the exception.

I could of cashed ewe hoggs last week for £110-£120 but I didn’t....I won’t be if they are £140 next spring either. Most will be ear notched from our best ewes

Agree with this , no point in selecting your best breeding sheep then killing them however if the hoggs are £130 + my homebred empties will be going after scanning 💰

That just about sums up what I do. I’m always selling the best and strongest ewes in the autumn as breeders and spring with lambs. Iv ended up with either ewe lambs or old girls.
I had years of doing that. Sold 400 draft ewes at 3 crop their prime every year and lambed 500 shearlings and kept hundreds with no teeth. It can be done but there can be a few disasters along the way.
Cull ewe values and disposal charges have persuaded me to keep a relatively younger flock
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do though

Mule ewes with twins at 3 crop look to good to keep around for me (and helps the cash flow) so sell a load of them every spring. I have ended up with 100’s of broken mouth ewes this year, but they should be ok on cover crops and liquid feed if needs be. The better half of these will be sold with lambs.
