Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Mule ewes with twins at 3 crop look to good to keep around for me (and helps the cash flow) so sell a load of them every spring. I have ended up with 100’s of broken mouth ewes this year, but they should be ok on cover crops and liquid feed if needs be. The better half of these will be sold with lambs.
Good way of getting shot of them if you sell them with lambs.
Plenty of molasses and or chopped beet is a good way to stop them going off their feet in the six weeks up to lambing.
You will already know that

I’m seriously considering the other end of the scale [emoji85] buying 300-400 draft ewes every year... lambing then... then kill the lambs and any ewes loosing teeth or condition ect and repeat probably carry 150 a year over from the batch and kill them in second year
That could be done but with such high breeding sheep values they have been too dear to do that this backend in the earlier sales especially. Gone off the boil lately a bit.
Who knows though if culls go up to dizzy heights then they will look ok

We had that to day bunch of incalf heifers arrived in the yard a lunch time as a bloody walker had left a gate open only walked half a mile

Do you ever go to Sedge to see your cattle sold?

I know last year one week you posted on here that you were sending some Fri steers and posted pics of the ones going the next Sat, i knew they were your cattle as soon as they came in the ring and the comments from two of my mates stood beside me ( and who only buy decent contx cattle ) were: These Fri steers are bloody good cattle/ the farmer has done a very good job of rearing them/ they really are a credit to the vendor/ they are better farmed/ reared than most of the cont x dairy cattle we have seen today.

Does not take much of steer/ heifer in the store ring to clear £900 today!

Trade was unreal,

Question's are : What will happen to store/ stirk prices when the BPS comes in?? How much dearer will these cattle go after Dec 1st??
Remember what you said to me now GUTHRIE !!!

‘How much more do YOU expect store values to go up with prime cattle values and straw in mind ?’

Have you changed your tune?

Prime cattle price is very good currently and far higher than anyone thought it would be at this time with the way things are ( ref the virus/ brexit etc ) .

Take a look at the straw prices from Sedge today that i have posted on the forage tracker thread, not anywhere near as strong as people thought they would be and not only that many lots of straw were unsold......

Why's that

Exeter's store lamb trade has been the dearest in the SW all season.

Some large volume buyers have actually told RS that they will not attend Exeter now as the trade is far and above anywhere else in the UK for Store lambs and even thou they do not now come to Exeter if has not made one iota of difference to the very strong trade that is currently the case at Exeter.

Does NB still come down? He used to be a bit greedy. Obviously it’s a free country but just my opinion.

Iv bought 50 real nice mules out of Kirby this year too dip my toe in at it all full mouths and straight bags £87 a head delivered too staffordshire + £3 on chlamydia vac and £2 on heptavac so owe me £92 ... were a bit late weaned for me as I lamb last week of January too last week of February but all got raddle marked so hopefully held ... If they put me 1.8 lambs on the ground and sell away at £80 a life + £80 for there Mum cull they’ll stand me £240 .... minus lambing costs and my own time should in theory be money in it

Anybody been to gisburn today ?
Had a mate take 6 weaned calves all good sorts but he said trade was well down there to nearing to abysmal.
He wouldn’t have wanted to be some of the vendors waiting for the report at the end of day as they would have been disappointed.

They sound cheap. I’ve heard of most making over £100 earlier on.
I breed replacements but like you I’m starting to think instead of keeping big numbers of ewes to breed off I can actually buy them cheaper (sometimes) than I can breed them myself.
Ive bought 500 since February. None of them look dear to me. If you are willing to sort through them and cull them properly at the right time they are a better bet than buying at the 12 o clock sales.I quite enjoy sorting through them to see what needs to go where
