I was told that the BPS system was a huge bodge of several elderly IT systems tied together with red string and gaffer tape that just about managed to limp through each year.

A brand new system was in the process of being developed and tested about 4/5 years ago with live online mapping updates, the ability to edit field borders and hedges without paper forms and many other useful features. Then CAP reform was announced. Then Bre*it and all development was paused and what we are left with is the operational parts of the new system welded onto the creaking remains of the old system.

Or at least so I was told by an RPA rep at a show....

I don't mind it. It sort of works.

When the first did bps the system was as you described and worked well if there were few logged on
but in working hours with all the agents and office based farmers on the system could not update fast enough and was very slow
they took out the clunky bits and that’s what works now

I manage to get on early on and edited a chunk of my fields online hedges ineligible bits ect
now need rle1 to do the same

I always thought the BPS screens did look like a first year undergrad project but it works so I am not complaining. I just wish they’d leave it alone now but everything will be up the air again soon and we will have to start all over again or not bother at all.

now the uk runs it self they do not need to have the information on cropping down to a field level
no need for hedgerow information for greening
just need the number of entitlements and the rate per ha and then claim based on total area registered as eligable
they could then use a lot less time on each claim and transfer every one not needed to elms management
