Sprayed off our cover crops 4 weeks ago, some of the oil radish had set pods and seed at that point. Out of curiosity I tried to grow some seed taken from a few pods this week.

Is it going to be an issue in peas and beans? The seed is very well protected from rain in the pod so I doubt it will rot or get eaten by birds.

Yes it will be an issue, be no different to having loads of osr or charlock.

You need to get it on the ground so it grows before.

MCPB for use in peas - so good control of brassica species. Maybe a bit more tricky in beans where just bentazone - though I mostly get good control of Charlock and vol rape in beans with bentazone. I appreciate though some folks seem to struggle with bentazone.

In my experience the birds should find most of them before the spring

Agree. I doubt will be an issue - have myself seen it before. My post was just to point out there are herbicide options if required.

if you leave it on top and do not mix it with soil it will not be an issue

cultivation will make this a problem for generations !

Yep, brassica seed can last for decade after decade. Natural predation of the seeds on soil surface. Whole theory of stale seedbeds somewhat flawed. Encourage germination of a percentage of seeds, but protect a proportion by burying. Does go against the grain though. Hey ho.

other than birds eating it a problem on the surface is easy sorted with glyphosate over the next couple of seasons

easly controlled in cereals

in beans if there is a few charlocks i find the pollen beetle destroys them before seeding
if there is a lot then bentazone is effective

a layer of straw and cover crop helps reduce brassica seed germination they need enough light to instigat germination
they love cultivated fields

Usually the ones who don’t read the label. Either do it twice at 1.5 litres or once at 3 litres and 400l/ha water.

dont forget they can and do fall down deep into cracks in late summer on heavier ground though, them rascal brassica seeds...

1.5litres after a good frost is very effective on brassica weeds

Wondering about my mustard cover crop. Usually topped and ploughed in by now ( yeah, OK, I know ). I can see pods have set. Looking at ground conditions, and long range forecast won't be able to do much about it till spring. Big problems in years to come ?

Take some indoors and see if it sprouts on some bogroll
