How long should a machine last

I was talking with a guy today & he was telling of a problem he has with a new machine,He bought a new machine in 2015 , full dealer service history record to date on it & it is now needing a complete new engine & has only done 2500 hours, the machine is out of warranty now & the manufacturer as no interest in his problem at all & will not lift a finger to help him & he is going to have to fork out for a complete new engine, he asked me if i knew at what point is the machine not fit for the purpose it was bought to do & what design live a modern day machine should have , he is not a forum member so i said i would ask for it , i must say i was very surprised to be told this manufacturer had no interest in his problem at all.

How long is a piece of string?
Whilst it may only have done 2500 hrs, you and I don’t know how hard those hours were or if the machine was maintained correctly. At some point, a manufacturer has to walk away and after 5 years that’s not unreasonable surely?

Who made the engine, I believe Manitou bought engines without warranty about 15 years ago, and my builder with less than 1000 hours on it had a big bill to pay

Got 10,000 hours out of 1980's classics easily. ( And I don't mean a Triggers broom like the Classic tractor Leyland which has done 60,000 hours, but every major component has been replaced 3 times

)
A modern £100k tractor should do 20,000 hours with no major issues ?
Otherwise, WTF ?

Whilst it sound rather unfortunate to have failed at 2500hrs, and if it's been looked after no it shouldn't reasonably have failed at those hours, I'm not sure why anyone would think the manufacturer should have any interest in a 5 or 6 year old machine

It's the five year old bit that's the problem, it could have had thousands of cold starts and only run 5 minutes at time. Was it serviced correctly with the right oils? Can the manufacturer download info to see how it's been run?
You need the full picture and both sides of the story to judge.

But an engine can fail at any time, if its out of warranty its out.

I've seen waste trommels with 5000 hours on them and I'd say they wouldn't do a lot more

Just reading in Farm Machinery Journal about a 2012 JD 6170R that has clocked 21,000 hours so far. Not touched the engine or IVT

I think you've done well to get 10,000 trouble free out of a 1980's tractor

Rubbish, 15 years ago it was mostly all perkins engines and likely the 1100 series engines, they all had manitous standard 12 month warranty or additional if you paid for it as an option.

BUT if you went direct to Perkins all them 1100 series engines no matter what they were fitted in had 2 years warranty with perkins, you just filled in a form with engine details machine it was fitted too, date and hours recorded etc and perkins sent someone out to fix it.

Everything is made to such fine tolerances these days and runs very hot with these new engine high tiers and long intervals between oil changes I don't like it. Most of our problems is faulty censers.

"should do" are dangerous words in the countryside.

But I do agree, 100%

When you consider we used to give cars valve-grinds etc and rebuild them at about ¼ the life expectancy of your average car now, what's with that?
Pleased to say my old crappy Italian tub is about 8450 hours now and only really been leaky pipes etc to fix (due to the designers having drinks that weekend) it's been a good one.

Likewise the old plough tractor, MF8260, 26200 hours and still going. Masseys are definitely crap

EGR ,IMHO, can't be good sending all them exhaust gases back through the engine allied with built to a budget rather than top spec.
