I’m after building some sheep yards on a lease block. Thinking wood be best for price. How do I make sure they don’t rot in a couple of years though?

was going to floor them in tarmac planings as well.

An Alluninium portable yard would be the best bet fixed ones are never quite right. Creosote timber would ensure they last but it depends on how long the lease is for?

Ive got portable yard already. But would like a large permanent one. I intend on running 1000+ ewes and their lambs in a mob.

I replaced our wooden pens last year... dad replaced them 30-35 years previously with creosoted Larch post and rail. The rails are mostly still in good order (I've kept the majority) but the posts were well gone.

Sadly, I expect, you'll hardly can get Larch now

I was thinking plastic posts and exterior ply for the race. Then clipex posts and stocknet for the pens.

larch avail here.

Do you mean the recycled black plastic posts?... make sure and get the ones with the steel shank in them.

Buffalo Board or the likes would be good for race yeah - can see you're taking inspiration straight from the RAPPA/Prattley/Alligator (y)

I'm not sure how tar planings would work on the floor, I've contemplated for my yard

Capping is the point. Creates a hard standing which rain will wash off... much like concrete.

Stone isn't great, they paddle the mud up through it and you end up in a fudgeing mess
My planings hold water and stir up the top layer all the time as it can’t get away. More open stone yards/hard standings are drier and I find them better, a quick scrape over once in a while and they wash off as good as new. As soon as you get mud on Planings they are a constant sesspit.
