What Pick Up Truck...?

Hey up Drillman. I occasionally pop my DMax into low range just to stop it seizing up. Don’t know if it matters but at least I know it’s still working!

To the OP I have no advice as to which pickup to buy. All that have been mentioned have their merits. I’d vote auto box for sure. I have a 2.5ltr dmax and happy with it. It is my second one. First one had issues with dpf regen and had to have injectors changed. This turned into a long job due to one being seized in and engine had to come out. Then a long wait for a part of over a month. In meantime dealer lent me both new auto and manual 1.9ltr models. Wasn’t that keen on the smaller engine so got a deal on one of the last 2.5ltrs. Never drove the old one again so never knew if injectors cured the dpf regen issue.

Drillman - I did come across a newish low mileage Ranger 3.2 and went as far as enquiring about a trade. This was just before COVID struck in feb. Didn’t hear anything for a day or 2 then got a call saying they were waiting for another quote on my vehicle. They not really car dealers as such. I would see what it was going to cost and make my mind up. Never heard another thing! COVID struck in UK and I lost interest to chase it up. The few I mentioned it too all tell me I dodged a bullet ;) These were maybe the same ones that asked me why I bought that rubbish when I bought a Landini but when it was eventually swapped for a John Deere commented that it would not be as reliable as the Landini :rolleyes:Personally I prefer the Ford over the Isuzu from the perspective of the drivers seat.
To be honest none of them are bad. Plus and minus with any brand really depending on intended use.

reason I bought the Ford was I liked the look of it. It was the first vehicle to tempt me away from a long list of LR products. Just a shame that Ford dealers are useless and Fords attitude to the oil pump fiasco is diabolical. Suprised no one has sued them over it to be honest

Ford dealer at Driffield seemed friendly? Test drove one and made and enquiry with them but went no further. I think Isuzu are bringing a new d-max sometime next year. I think it has the same 1.9 engine in *YAWN* though don’t know for sure. Neighbour had made an enquiry on a new d-max and was told to be sharp as after ‘brexit’ they’d be going up 10%. Like tractors they’ve become expensive and with vat then just plain wrong. I probably look s/h next time - maybe Ford, VW

After Brexit they should come down 10% unless we are going to keep on with the 10% EU tarrif

When I bought my 3.2 new two years ago the Driffield dealer was the most expensive quote I received by about 8k.. Best deal and who I dealt with was Arnold Clark Newcastle. Not only did they give the best deal but they were the only ones who provided the quote there and then on the first phone call. No messing around saying we'll call you back and never do. Their service was excellent and followed up with a call to see if I was happy a month later.

A lot of bull poo bandied about what is going to happen from January onwards...

Driffield dealer talked of long delivery times which switched me off. Like most things it’s worth shopping about. I’m hoping my Isuzu lasts a while. Been sound to date..

Driffield dealer I use for general servicing and are better than most. However there not a transit centre so are limited to what they can sort on the Ranger we’ve found. And also don’t tend to hold or order much in the way of ranger stock so not the best for commercial type stuff. to be fair there more a Ford car dealer rather than a commercial dealer.

for purchasing I had 6 different Ford dealers on the go within 100 miles of us in all directions.

Lookers in Leeds got the order both times for me as they blew everyone else out of the water once they got there head round the NFU discount structure.

The dealer to avoid at all costs is Stoneacre York. There a bunch of merchant bankers!

I find most dealers worth avoiding. They seem to want to relieve me of money. The older I get the less it seems to want to leave me and harder to acquire in the first place. Dealers all seem to think this farming lark is good - unless it’s because they’ve been talking to Drillman before me 🤣

Be no dealers making much out of poor old Drillman in 2021 that’s for sure!

Not on your own there. No issues with York Vans the local Isuzu dealer but I’ve used a local garage to do MOT and the front brakes that wore out pads and chewed a disk. They’re cheaper and a lot nearer to save raking about in these COVID times.

There’s a Ranger 3.2 local to me that’s done under 17k miles and keeps going into limp mode, has been plugged in at dealer and they can’t find stored fault code , driving the bloke mad.... thinks it’s an Adblue issue.
Could be wiring on the ad blue sensor. Brothers 3.2 kept doing the same.

Also he was told to only use a certain type of ad blue in the ranger.cerial number has a R in it.got no idea what the difference is.

Used them for last few years but never had a quote for trade in twice recently when I have asked about new and second hand. Disappointed really, you hear this a lot nowadays that dealers never get back to you.

38K & snapped timing chain @ 3yr old ,Nissan no help .50k and snapped chassis
Less than 3 years of age and serviced on time? Should have been a warranty job. Snapped chassis should have, if they had started the scheme by then, a super-generous payout. What went wrong that you missed out on these, assuming from your 'tone' that you did?

Chassis were terrible quality, no doubt about it. Unfortunately they don't seem to have improved the rust protection or strength one bit on later models up to current ones. I'm certainly not convinced that they have.
There's a new model of Navara about to go on sale, possibly built in S Africa rather than Spain, due to the imminent closure of their Spanish factory. It will be interesting to see whether they have put more effort into longevity and durability on these new models.

Might as well add on to this thread - nobody wants another what pickup thread!

Have a 13 plate hilux, not high miles but has lost power twice now and been unable to start (no solution yet) and had to have dpf unclogged.

Lost a little faith in it. May well have a small van in replacement if i was to change, as need to tow has reduced significantly. If i did go for a pickup, what's best for short (6mile) journeys, without a long run that regularly (especially this yesr)? After Dpf issues, this may well be a factor next time.

Extended service int by 2k miles ,so gave them an excuse to walk away, but its their loss as in lost sales

20 years ago you bought a pickup with 100hp no emissions gubbins and flogged it everywhere you went to make any progress. Now you buy a pickup with double the hp, dpf, egr, adblue etc and potter about trying to get mpg from it. Never gets flogged never gets warm short journeys etc. If engine never gets any proper heat into it it'll never burn clean so recycles its own soot through itself all the time. Viscous circle. Oh and some of the crap in fuel now doesn't help either.
