It’s about time these cattle and sheep went through the roof, they’ve been sh!t for years. Only time cattle were a realistic trade was horsegate year. When subs are gone these current prices are going to have to be the norm otherwise shelves will be empty and folk will be hungry
it might be a blessing in disguise , higher retail prices due to covid etc will soften resistance up for a general rise long term across all sectors , would have been hard slog without it , problem will now be HMG basing future elms payments on this years values which could be a flash in the pan . How cross boarder trade is handled (and larrys antics ) will determine beef values

local piggery here has been pulled down and totally rebuilt , huge enclosed buildings , all new feed bins and feed gear , new covered lagoon , just been replaced with two huge towers (maybe AD plant ) must be millions invested , squeaky bum time i should think
That’s how all these B and B pigs are on the go. It’s promoted by banks. Then we read prices are shyte for pigs cattle are good sheep are on fire. All the while some of the people who reckon they are in the know laugh at beef and sheep. I always reckon it’s to do with regular money or cash flow

That’s very true and a bit of a dilemma.

I have probably 60 ewe lambs that were too small to tup and I was going to run as shearlings and sell prob 40 of them as I don’t really need them unless I culled ewes hard post lambing.

So flog 40 if I can get £120 quid for them now or hold till summer sakes and maybe get £130??

Hold them until April and sell them fat for £150?

If you don't need them yourself then a bird in the hand...
I sold all my empties a few years ago when hoggets were a good trade, thinking I'd just keep extra ewe lambs the following year. It was handy not carrying passengers, but it's surprising how much it knocks lambs sold a year later.
Oh, and the breeding ewes were making less than the hoggets had that year.

Pigs are rarely much good in the market, and no producer of any scale sells in the marts anyway. Pigs are almost all sold dw, and mostly on contract. The B&B pig guys are doing OK from what I hear, and even being looked after on extra straw costs (rather than having dirty pigs at the slaughterhouse I suppose).

Banks tend to push certain sectors and certain people and hold a lot more businesses back. Or at least not encourage them. Often promote the wrong ones

Any idea what sort of prices these contracts offer?

“The opening sale of store cattle for 2021 and 31st Anniversary at Thainstone witnessed a tremendous show of well-bred cattle which sold to a full house of buyers and met a fantastic trade with an overall average per head of £1,151.12. The added feature of the sale was the annual consignment of bulling heifers

Thumbs down from me I'm afraid..... I hate sheep but I wouldn't want my poor beggers to bleed out to death for the sake of a couple of extra quid.... And if your Saleing that close to the wind then maybe you've bitten off more than u can choose...... 😔😔😔
£2/sheep on 3000 is £6 000. That’s a lot of money and not really “sailing too close too the wind...”

Guess that's killing price

They would just about go deadweight but certainly not liveweight!

Only 995 store lambs penned, if they were about this trade would certainly draw them out.

Even more good news for the hard pressed beef/sheep sectors as i have just been told straw is dropping in price, delivered is back £20 ton already this week to £130/40 for barley delivered into Devon this week.
