They arrive at 28 days, then with me for a min of 8 weeks. Then they head off to Yorkshire for final fattening. Then muck out, disinfect, re bed and repeat !

Two days to spare?? You obviously don't have enough on if it was ready with two whole days to spare!
Mate was running a PT cross boar over SB sows and left some nice pigs, great eating
He woulnt have a pure PT as they have a tendency to drop dead aparantly

I don't know if it's still the case but I'm sure that some Pietrains used to carry a gene that caused hyperthermia, hence the high mortality.

I have read that PT have some genetic thing they can drop dead with stress, but could be wrong .

That's correct, a stress gene, known as the "halothane gene" as carriers also had an adverse reaction to halothane gas, and that was used to test for the gene in breeding stock. Often they would die when being loaded. Thankfully most genetic companies bred the gene out in the 1990's.

I suspect that some breeders didn't breed out the halothane gene as it was associated with some desirable traits.
I currently use a Pietrain based terminal sire via AI and personally wouldn't consider having pure pietrains.

outfit who has some gilts on neighbours is pushing close to 20000 sows ,

It will only continue, rightly or wrongly. Nevertheless, there are many new entrants keeping outdoor sows on an agistment contract around here, which has given them a great chance to start up. Also many farms have benefitted from rearing or finishing on contract.

It's pretty bad here (big estate south of Thetford) but I've been about long enough to avoid the wet areas if possible. We have some very light land but yes there has been a lot of run off but fortunately there are no residential neighbours.

I was think of offering a contract for someone near me to keep three gos sows and producing my weaners ha ha ha ha same but tiny bit smaller ha not many back yard pigs round here just bnb pigs
